Jerome Taylor bowls WI to a 98-run win in the 2nd ODI

April 30, 2006 (Click to see the Scorecard)

21-year-old fast bowler from Jamaica, Jerome Taylor ripped through the Zimbabwean top order to help West Indies win the 2nd ODI by 98 runs. Jerome Taylor took the first three wickets at the top in his three overs to reduce Zimbabwe to a disastrous 11 for 3. The Zimbabwean Skipper, Terrence Duffin was bowled a beautiful inswinging yorker and Brendan Taylor was the other batsman who got bowled too by an inswinger from the same bowler. Piet Rinkie was the first man to go for Zimbabwe playing across the line and getting a leading edge. Zimbabwe could never recover from this position of losing three wickets and the rest of the batsmen just dragged the match.

Once again Justice Chibhabha came up with a fifty and he looks like the only Zinbabwean batsman who is upto some standards at the International level. Chibhabha went onto score 67 which is now his highest ODI score and incidentally has also become his highest score in his first class limited overs career as well. The Mashonland teenager played exactly 100 deliveries and scored 8 hits to the fence. Giving him company for a good time was another talented bat - Elton Chigumbara. Chigumbara scored just 13 but he helped Chibhabha to put on 56 runs to the 4th wicket to help Zimbabwe from a real embarrassment of getting bowled out under 100. Zimbabweans eventually folded up to 144 with two major contributions from Justice Chibhabha and Mr.Extras who batted well to score 21 runs. Chibhabha's end came through a forceful shot on the frontfoot off an angled away delivery from Ian Bradshaw.

Sarwan was the top scorer This time, West Indies elected to bat first after winning the toss and their batsmen were once again out of sorts and in the end managed to put up 242. Chris Gayle and Runako Morton put on a 70-runs stand for the opening wicket but they failed in providing the momentum required to launch a tall score. The Zimbabwean bowlers with their nagging medium pace made strokeplay very difficult and the West Indies batsmen were once again forced to work hard for their runs. Zimbabwean bowlers with their tight line and length could restrict the homeside for 85 for 3 in about 22 overs. It was then the pair of the two Guyanese Ramnaresh Sarwan and former skipper Shiv Chanderpaul who batted together for almost 15 overs to take West Indies to 154 for 4 in the 38th over, where Sarwan was out trying to play a big shot on the onside. Sarwan was out for a well made 55 which came in 61 balls and his innings also included 2 sixes, which he had scored of the off spinner Prosper Utseya. Brian Lara and Dwayne Bravo flopped and Chanderpaul between these two partnerships scratched his way in the middle. He soon found an able partner in Dwayne Smith who smashed his way playing three overs in total and getting 30 quick runs with three hits out of the ground. Chanderpaul ended his innings at 46 after playing 74 balls and he just managed to squeeze in a couple of boundaries.

For his 4-wicket haul, Jerome Taylor was adjudged as the Man of the Match and the fast bowler was also yesterday's Man of the Match. Plenty of cricket left in this series with five more ODIs to be played, West Indies look cautious in not allowing Zimbabwe to cause an upset or two.

Brief Scores :

West Indies 242 for 9 in 50 overs (Sarwan 55 Gayle 49 Chanderpaul 46 Dwayne Smith 30, Mupariwa 3/46 Justice Chibhabha 2/39) beat Zimbabwe 144 in 46.2 overs (Justice Chibhabha 67 , Jerome Taylor 4/24 Gayle 2/21)
