Pakistan Series is going to be tough : John Wright

23rd Feb, 2005:

Pakistan Series is going to be tough: John WrightCricketfundas.com correspondents B.V.Swagath and Ashwat Ramani had the opportunity to attend the Media Conference with the Indian Coach, John Wright during the 2nd Day of the Duleep Trophy encounter between West Zone and South Zone.

Here’s some of what John Wright had to say:

On how was the Indian team gearing up for the big series against Pakistan next month:

The boys are doing well. The Series is going to be tough, but our performances in the longer version of the game for the past one year have been good. We have performed decently against the likes of Australia and Pakistan. We would like to continue that in this particular Series also.

Regarding the tennis elbow of Sachin Tendulkar:

Sachin has been recovered well from his tennis elbow injury which hampered him from playing for the past few months. He was very eager to play this match and prove his fitness. Sachin is eager to face the Pakistan team next month and his inclusion in the side will depend on his fitness level during that period of time.

On how fit are bowlers like Pathan, Agarkar and Balaji who bowled too many no-balls in the ongoing Duleep Trophy Match:

Yes, I agree that Irfan bowled a lot of no-balls yesterday and Balaji did the same today. But you've got to agree to the fact that both these guys are making a comeback after a long time along with Ajit Agarkar. They will take some time to get back into the groove. It's not very easy to attain your rhythm after coming back from a long injury. We will make sure that such unforced errors are minimized before the all important Pakistan Series.

What kind of a squad are you expecting for the Pakistan Series:

The Squads are left for the selectors to decide. My main job is to coach the players who are in the Final 14. As far as the final XI is concerned, we will be deciding that depending upon the pitch and other conditions at each venue.

Regarding the recent slump in the One Day form of the Indian Team:

Yeah, it's true that we haven't been doing well for the past 4-5 months as far as the One-Dayers are concerned. But on the other hand, we have been doing quite well in the Tests. We had a chance of winning the 2nd Test at Chennai but rain came in at the wrong time. I admit that we played poorly in Bangalore and Nagpur, but we did well in Mumbai. Even in Pakistan, we were impressive with a 2-1 series win.

How is the new Physiotherapist John Gloster working with the players?

John Gloster has been a good Physio and he has come at the right time for us. He mingles with the players very well and the players are comfortable with him. He also has quite a bit of experience having been the physio for the Bangladesh Cricket team and also Surrey. I hope he continues with the good job that he is doing.

Regarding the new International Cricket Stadium at Hyderabad:

I am very happy that a Cricket Stadium has come up in Hyderabad. The facilities in the ground are tremendous and all credit goes to the Hyderabad Cricket Association who have worked very hard. I remember last year when we were in Australia, Shivlal Yadav used to show me the progress in the construction of the Stadium, and now that it is finally done, I feel happy for all the people associated with the Stadium and wish you all the best for your future endeavors.
