All rain, no play
at Chester-le-Street! |
June 15, 2007 (Link to
Scorecard)
The first day's play of the fourth and
final Test between England and West
Indies was a complete wash out without a
single ball bowled. There was no chance
of a toss as well with heavy rain
pouring down all the day at the
Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street.
The rain might have robbed the cricket
but for the fans, the ECB will be giving
a full refund for their tickets.
England have already this Series having
won the second and third Tests at Leeds
and Old Trafford respectively. The first
Test at Lord's was drawn with batsmen on
both sides having a feast on a flat
track. At Leeds, Windies succumbed to
the swing of the comeback man - left
armer Ryan Sidebottom to go along with
the tragic injury to their skipper
Ramnaresh Sarwan. Windies suffered their
worst ever defeat in their history.
The third Test at Old Trafford finally
saw the Windies competing with a
promising fight in their first innings
which was spoilt by Monty Panesar. In
England's second innings, debutant
Darren Sammy bowled outstandingly well
to capture as many as seven wickets but
the target for the West Indies was about
450 which was too tough. But
surprisingly England felt the heat
because of a surprising resistance
coming from the West Indian batsmen led
by Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Eventually
Monty Panesar spun the English to
victory. Now with four days still left
in the last test, there is enough time
for England to make it 3-0 but then it
depends on the weather.
