England in a
winning position despite Sammy's seven |
June 09, 2007 (Link to
Scorecard)
Debutant seamer Darren Sammy had taken
as many as seven wickets in the England
Second innings which included three
wickets in an over. But England are
still comfortably placed in the Old
Trafford Test Match as they are left to
take nine wickets in two full days of
play. Alastair Cook registered his sixth
hundred playing just his 17th Test of
his career! Cook's ton has enabled
England to set a massive target of 455
for West Indies who have already lost
their skipper Daren Ganga.
England resuming the day's play at 34
for 1 stretched their score to 313. All
the action started to unfold during the
last session of play with as many as
eight wickets falling. England were
sitting pretty at 228 for 3 with Cook
approaching a century. Cook had earlier
put on 122 runs for the third wicket
with Pietersen who had got 68 with 7
fours. A Bravo's bouncer knocked the
helmet off Pietersen's head which fell
back onto the stumps which saw KP given
out as hit wicket! Alastair Cook was
dismissed by Chris Gayle with the left
hander making 106. Paul Collingwood was
the other significant contributor of the
day making 42 before Darren Sammy had
finished the innings with 7 for 66
bowling 21.3 overs.
Despite Sammy's efforts, West Indies are
still facing an uphill task having to
bat out two complete days or get 455 to
win. They have already lost a wicket and
that of Daren Ganga who is efficient in
killing time in a test match.
