Windies suffer
their worst ever defeat |
May 28, 2007 (Link to
Scorecard)
West Indies have suffered their worst
ever defeat, losing the Headingley Test
match by an innings and 283 runs. It
took only 33.1 overs for England to take
the 7 remaining West Indian wickets.
Overall the West Indies batting hit an
extreme low in this test match with
their first innings lasting 37 overs and
the second innings slightly better at
42.1 overs. Windies were bowled out for
141, five runs lesser than their first
innings total.
Kevin Pietersen for his double century
was given the Man of the Match award.
Resuming from their second day's score
of 22 for 2, Windies lost Chris Gayle to
Liam Plunkett in the second over of the
fourth day's play. There was a rain
interruption which held up play for a
while but once it was over, left armer
Ryan Sidebottom came back with the
wickets of Sylvester Joseph and Devon
Smith to have West Indies at 57 for 5.
Then followed a resistance for a change
from the tourists in the form of Runako
Morton and Dwayne Bravo. The two right
handers batted together for more than 16
overs to put up 63 runs before the
breakthrough was given by Harmison.
Morton was the man getting out for 25.
Harmison took another two wickets and
Monty Panesar got Bravo as the West
Indian innings folded quickly after the
start of the post tea session. Bravo
looked good in his stay of 74 balls in
which he had got 52 with 7 fours and a
six. Ramnaresh Sarwan didn't come onto
bat and it looks unlikely that he will
play any part in the remainder of the
series. Ryan Sidebottom had a fantastic
comeback test match. His second innings
figures were 4 for 44 in 15 overs to go
along with the overall match figures of
8 for 86 in 27 overs. Harmison showed
signs of getting in his own with 3 for
37 in the second innings. West Indies
have lot of time to regroup with the
third test at Old Trafford starting on
the 7th of June.
