Windies get
Marlon Samuels for Sarwan |
June 01, 2007
The
West Indies Selectors have named Marlon
Samuels as the replacement for the
injured Captain Ramnaresh Sarwan.
Samuels was originally axed from the
Test Squad unexpectedly but he was a
sure part of the One Day Squad that will
be announced on Saturday. The
26-year-old Jamaican has a modest
average of over 28.00 in the 23 tests he
has played with a career best of 104
against India.
The captaincy of the West Indies team
has been handed over to Daren Ganga but
for the One Dayers that might not be the
case. It is because Daren Ganga hasn't
been known to be good enough for the
limited version of the game. The nasty
shoulder injury to Sarwan had happened
during the fag end of the first day's
play of the Leeds Test which forced
Sarwan to stay away from batting.
Windies therefore suffered their worst
ever defeat in their history. Sarwan has
been ruled out for atleast six weeks for
recovering from his injury. West Indies
have enough time to regroup and come up
with something special to compete in
this four-test series.
Currently the West Indian team is
engaged in a traditional match against
the Marylebone Cricket Club at Durham.
The MCC Side would be featuring Sri
Lankan Master Blaster Sanath Jayasuriya
as well. The third test at Old Trafford
starts from the 7th with Marlon Samuels
taking the place of Sarwan and Shiv
Chanderpaul hopefully returning back
from his knee problem to replace
Sylvester Joseph most likely.
