West Indies
arrive for their Pak tour |
November 07, 2006
Brian
Lara's West Indies have entered the Pakistan
soil after a long gap of nine years to play a
series of Three Test Matches followed by Five
One Day Internationals. A 15-man Test Squad has
arrived in Lahore on Monday night. West Indies
and Pakistan had last played a bilateral Test
Series in 2004-05 in the Caribbean with the
3-Tests drawn 1-1.The last home series for
Pakistan against West Indies was in 2001-02 but
was unfortunately played in Sharjah due to
security fears following the September 11
attacks. Pakistan had a clean sweep in that
series with a 2-0 win.
From the Champions Trophy squad that had
lost to Australia in the finals, five
players have missed out in making it to the
squad that includes Wavell Hinds, Marlon
Samuels, Dwayne Smith, Carlton Baugh and
interestingly Ian Bradshaw. Two spinners have
been added in the form of chinaman bowler Dave
Mohammed and the tall off spinner Omari Banks.
Denesh Ramdin retained his Test spot as the
wicket keeper while Daren Powell has been added
to strengthen the bowling fire power. Lendl
Simmons is the only new face in the team. He is
a 21-year-old opening batsman who hails from
Trinidad and is the nephew of former West Indies
Test cricketer and former Zimbabwean Coach
Phil Simmons.
West Indies open their tour with a two-day warm
up game against Patron's XI at the Bagh-e-Jinnah
ground in Lahore. The homeside is being led by
Test Discard Asim Kamal.
