Windies have
Marlon Samuels in their Squad for WC |
February 16, 2007
The
2007 World Cup hosts, West Indies have named
their squad that has the tainted Marlon Samuels
among the 15 players selected. The ICC had
allowed West Indies to have Marlon Samuels in
the squad as their anti-corruption unit is still
probing his alleged connection with an Indian
bookie. There is no time frame in which the
probe will end which has allowed the Jamaican
all rounder to be picked.
While fourteen of the fifteen players pick
themselves, West Indian selectors have made a
surprise decision by naming an uncapped player -
Kieron Pollard of Trinidad. Pollard was a part
of the U-19 World Cup team and his selection in
the senior World Cup squad comes after just five
first class matches! The middle order bat who
chips in with useful medium pace has cracked two
hundreds and a fifty in the five first class
appearances for Trinidad. Notable omissions in
the West Indies team are that of Runako Morton
and Fidel Edwards. Rayad Emrit, an all rounder
who had made his debut in India hasn't succeeded
in keeping his place. Devon Smith, the opening
batsman has earned his place due to a decent
show in the same series in India. Ramnaresh
Sarwan is back from the foot injury he had
sustained in Pakistan and will be back in the
role of a Vice-Captain replacing Chris Gayle.
The West Indies Cricket Board has also named
five reserve players that consists of Runako
Morton, Sylvester Joseph, Daren Sammy, Dave
Mohammad and Fidel Edwards.
