Golden Debuts: Virender Sehwag
-
Openers? What a
dilemma!
by Bhavya Kumar Vasudevan
Ever
since his first match for India at the
International level, Virender Sehwag has batted
only one way. Full of domination, full of power.
When it is his day, luck just seems to stop
favouring his opponents. When lady luck is on
Sehwag's side, watching him bat is one of the
most dominating sites in World Cricket today. He
never seems to show any difference in the way he
plays in One Day Cricket or Test Cricket. Very
strong in cutting and flicking quick bowlers and
intimidating spinners with powerplay makes him a
potentially hostile batsman.
When Sehwag began
playing for India, he batted in the middle
order. On one occasion when India had lost their
top order against Australia in the Pepsi One day
Internationals, he came in and started playing
those incredible cut shots and scored his maiden
50. Ever since that day, he has consistently
been performing in the middle order. However,
undoubtedly the turning point of his career was
when he was asked to open the innings in the
absence of Sachin Tendulkar in Sri Lanka along
with Sourav Ganguly. He stroked an incredibly
quick 100 off the most cleanest cricketing shots
that forced New Zealand out of the tournament
and took India to the finals against Sri Lanka.
Sehwag had announced his arrival to
International cricket to the World with that
century.
Soon after that series
followed India's tour of South Africa, where
Sehwag, for the first time got his Test cap due
to his heroics in One Day Internationals. In the
1st Test against the Proteas he scored a century
on debut thus beginning his Test career
majestically. The majestic debut was followed by
a gloomy page in Indian cricket, where he along
with six other players were suspended by the
match referee Mike Denness for aggressive
appealing. Thankfully, this did not affect his
form. His batting prowess in One Day and Test
cricket has since been outstanding and only
aggressive. A brilliant 195 against Australia in
Melbourne proved his abilities against the best
team in the world. The sight of Sehwag going all
guns blazing seems like a bullet train speeding
without brakes installed in it. Whoever comes in
the way, is doomed!
