The opening match of the Unitech Cup which was
to be played today following
yesterday's abandonment, has been called
off. Yesterday's game was abandoned due to rain
but today it was called off due to the security
concerns raised after yesterday's bomb blast in
Colombo that had killed 7 people and had injured
about 15 people. The blast had taken place just
few kilometers from the two hotels that are
hosting the three teams. The South African
Cricket Board has appealed to the Sri Lankan
Board for canceling today's match as it is
waiting for ICC's advice in pulling out from
this tri-nation series. The Proteas have been a
worried unit and they are in no mood to stay in
Sri Lanka and are looking to pack off as and
when they get the green signal from its Board.
The future of the Unitech Cup looks bleak with
South Africa most likely to pull out due to
yesterday's bomb blast, but cricket might get
underway with India and Sri Lanka likely to play
a five-match series. The BCCI wants its team to
stay in the island as they would fall in a
similar situation like Sri Lanka when they host
the Champions Trophy in October despite the
recent Mumbai blasts that had killed hundreds of
people. The Indian Cricket Team will now travel
in bullet proof buses and each player would have
personal body guards after their security has
been reviewed by the Indian home ministry.
