Sri Lanka and
India to play a 3-ODIs Series as SA pulls out
officially |
August 18, 2006
The tri-nation Unitech Cup has been dumped
officially with South Africa deciding to pack
their bags and head towards their home at the
earliest. The security consultant to Cricket
South Africa has recognized that the current
situation in Sri Lanka is at an unacceptable
risk level. South African cricket team has been
shaken up following a claymore mine blast that
had blasted just a couple of kilometers away
from the Cinnamon Grand Hotel which is hosting
them on Monday. The South African Cricket Board
haven’t got the green signal from the ICC to
abandon the tour and they now face a 2 million
US dollar penalty for pulling out from the
tournament.
<p>Meanwhile the BCCI has agreed to play a
bilateral 3-ODIs Series now with Sri Lanka. The
first match of this series is to begin on the
18th. There has been a change in the venue with
the Sinhalese Sports Club hosting all the three
matches that would start at 10:00 AM local time.
With the weather likely to play spoil sport over
the next few days, the Sinhalese Sports Club has
been chosen instead of the R. Premadasa as the
former is known to have excellent drainage
facilities over the years. The other two matches
are on the 20th and 22nd. Sri Lanka Cricket
Board wanted the Indian team to play five ODIs
but there was the apprehension among the Indian
players who want to get back to India at the
earliest. The last bilateral series between Sri
Lanka and India took place in 2005 with India
comfortably beating their opponents by a margin
of 6-1.
