It took just the first
eleven deliveries of the match at Kingsmead to
know that Kenya had no chance to compete against
New Zealand in the first of the Group C matches.
A shocking score line of 1 for 4 in 1.5 overs in
a Twenty20 Match which meant that there was no
way that the African side could recover. The
entire match lasted just 24.3 overs with NZ
knocking off a low target of 74 in a little over
30 minutes losing one wicket.
The wicket at Durban was
slightly damp, the look of it was on the darker
side which prompted Daniel Vettori to put the
Kenyans to bat first. The second ball of the
game started the downfall with Shane Bond
cleaning up the defences of Maurice Ouma. Bond
picked up another wicket in the first over but
more damage was to follow from Mark Gillespie.
If Bond was getting the ball to swing in the air
at pace, Gillespie was getting it to seam a long
way in both directions with lot of zip from the
pitch. Gillespie too picked up two wickets in
his first over and Kenya were 1 for 4 in the
second over. It was a relief for Kenya that
Gillespie was given only a two-over spell. Kenya
just managed to get to 73 before getting bowled
out in 16.5 minutes. Collins Obuya was the joint
top scorer along with Thomas Odoyo with 18 runs
each. Gillespie had returned back for his last
spell in which he bowled just the five
deliveries to take the remaining two Kenyan
wickets. A deadly figures of 2.5-0-7-4 was
enough to get him the Man of the Match award.
Earlier Shane Bond finished with 4-1-12-2. Chris
Martin and Daniel Vettori took a couple of
wickets each hardly giving any runs in their
four overs.
Lou Vincent was the only
casualty in the Kiwis chase which lasted 7.4
overs. Vincent got cracking though with 27 from
20 with 4 fours and a six. Brendon McCullum, the
other opener got an unbeaten 16 from 13 while
Peter Fulton got 21 from 14 which included two
sixes.
