Members of the 10,000 Run Club in One Day
Internationals
Ten thousand is a number, denoted mathematically
by the figure 10,000! But in the world of
cricket it means much more…. Especially when it
reads under the runs column of batsmen!
Because it is something phenomenal, astounding
and mind boggling to see so many numbers under
the custody of two men. Four men who are not new
to such dizzy heights, with so much talent at
their disposal. The peak scaled is indeed huge,
and astronomical for anyone to climb upto. And
everyone to dream for…
The four men are Sachin Tendulkar,
Inzamam-ul-Haq, Saurav Ganguly and Sanath
Jayasuriya, if you haven’t got the answer yet!
Let us examine the Road to the 10,000 Run club
and why it is so special:
There wasn’t a 10,000 run club for starters. And
it needed a founder. Time finds founders, and so
it did. The founder of this club was the Mumbai
Maestro, Sachin Tendulkar. None seemed to equal
his valor, for he was all-alone for quite
sometime.
Then another contemporary superstar, the
Sleeping Giant, the Sultan of Multan, Inzamam ul
Haq, joined him. With so many One Dayers being
played, and with cricket becoming a batsman’s
game, it was only time that others followed
suit.
Again, it is fodder to feed for the fact that
all the four have been Asian batsmen, and all
have been captains of their sides (some of them
continue as captains!)… just a passing thought,
perhaps?
The latest entrants to an elite club of people
who have spent a lot of time with the bat in the
shorter version of this game followed by the
entire globe with such awe and shock over every
possible event that has stormed it. That club
was christened the 10000 run club of ODIs.
And as for the record - 10,000 runs speak for
themselves! Both Jayasuriya and Ganguly have
breached the mark and gone beyond in the space
of a week… something for cricket fans and
academics, the statisticians to note down. And
soon it was celebration time in the cities,
streets and gullies of cricket. Time to
speculate what has happened over the years, and
to welcome the new members with glee! And to
wait for more members to register themselves in
the future…
They say memories never fade. No matter how many
decades go past our lives, no matter how many
generations come across cricket as a sport of
fame and glory, these men shall indeed carry
their achievements and stand amongst the hardest
targets for the hall of fame of all time. For
they are the Noble men of the timeless saga!
