Cricketfundas.com Interviews: Sulakshana Naik

Sulakshana NaikSulakshana Naik is a wicket keeper batswoman who had a brief stint with the Indian women's team in 2002 on the tours of England and Ireland. This wicket keeper has a fifty against Ireland in the World Series of Women's Cricket in England. Former Indian opener Gargi Banerjee had a talk with Sulakshana Naik in Mumbai to bring out this interview :

Gargi Banerji: When did you start playing cricket and why cricket?

Sulakhshana : My entry into Cricket was at an age of 12 and I guess I got into this game because everybody in my family used to play cricket. My mom inspired me a lot to play cricket.

Gargi Banerji: And you are a wicket keeper…why did you choose to become a Keeper?

Sulakhshana: Basically I love wicket keeping because it is a challenging job and you are involved in each and every delivery bowled during an innings. Infact a wicket keeper is the center of attraction in any match.

Gargi Banerji: Are you disappointed of not being in the Indian team?

Sulakhshana: No… not really. I think it is a part of the game and we should play positive cricket and not think about selection and selectors. We have to try to give our best every time we walk onto the field and just shut the thoughts about being selected or not.

Gargi Banerji: What do you think has been the role of Indian Railways in Indian women's cricket?

Sulakhshana: Firstly the facilities provided by Railways are very good. Railways have been giving support infact jobs to many girls and that is a very important aspect of a women cricketer's life. And you can see the results, there are about nine or ten girls from Indian Railways in the current Indian squad!

Gargi Banerjee: If you could name one women cricketer who could be considered as an icon of women's cricket, who would be that person?

Sulakhshana: Well, it certainly is a tough question to answer, but I think I would go for Miss Diana Edulji, former Indian skipper and a women's cricket legend. Don't you think so?

Gargi Banerji: Can you tell us whom you admire in the present Indian team?

Sulakhshana: Anjum Chopra, Mithali Raj and Hemlata kala, all wonderful players and always exciting to watch.

Gargi Banerji: What kind of hobbies do you have?

Sulakhshana: I don't have specific hobbies but when I am free I like to spend time with my pet dog Jonty or watch TV.

Gargi Banerji: What do you think about Cricketfundas.com?

Sulakhshana: I have visited the website a few times and yes it looks to be a good website and I guess its going to take some time before it can really grow into a major force to reckon with. All the best to Cricketfundas.com and you Gargi Banerji, I love to see more of your articles in the future.
