A
Great Innings is about to end |
From Palash Patel
He has been the highest century maker in tests
for Australia, played in the most number of test
matches in the world, the 2nd highest run-getter
for his country, the most successful test
captain of all times, he also captained a world
cup winning team and he is simply the most
admired Aussie cricketer in India.
Well those are the few main qualities that this
great ambassador of the game possesses. For more
than 15 years he has served his nation with 101%
commitment. At the age of 38 he has decided to
say goodbye to the longer version of the game
(he already retired from ODI cricket). He has
been an icon for modern day cricket and he is
the one who deserves to be complimented the most
for taking Australia on top of world cricket and
making them unbeatable.
After him, the captaincy is going to land on to
the able shoulders of Ricky Ponting. Being an
Indian, I am too fed up of Australia’s
domination in world cricket but with his
departure from the game, one could only hope
that we might get an outside chance to beat the
world champions.
He has made the Aussies into such a unit that
even if they are short by 5 players of their
best eleven, it won’t make any difference. We
saw that lately in the tri-series played in
India. It was sad that this great captain who
has turned his team into a phenomenal unit was
sacked from the ODI team as under his leadership
they failed to make the finals of the Carlton
and United tri-series featuring South Africa and
the Kiwis as the other two competitors. But,
surely this won’t take away his achievements and
his contribution to Australian cricket.
As we all know that he is already helping poor
children in India by helping them financially,
he is also planning to open a school in India
which would undoubtedly add to his greatness.
This series would be our last chance to see the
legend in action but surely he would always be
there in our hearts as a true legend. I would
like to bid farewell to this great kind hearted
man who certainly took cricket to another level.
Thanking Steve Waugh on behalf of the
Cricketfundas.com team for entertaining us with
your skills for all these years.
