Hosts England recovered from the early trouble of 22 for 3 to finish Day 1 of the 2nd Test at Lord’s at a strong 342 for 6 after being asked to bat first by the visiting Sri Lankans.

Alastair Cook (96 from 164 balls with 15 fours) and Ian Bell (52 from 106 balls with 8 fours) repaired the English innings with a third wicket stand of 108.  Cook went onto add 71 more runs for the fourth wicket with Eoin Morgan to bail out England almost out of trouble.

Morgan scored 79 (from 128 balls with 10 fours and 2 sixes) while putting up a crucial partnership of 101 with Matt Prior who saw the first day through with an unbeaten 73 to take England to 342 for 6.
