Statistical Preview: India Vs Pakistan 2004-05:
3rd Test at Bangalore |
Compiled by Ashwat Ramani
The 2nd Test at Kolkata
saw India taking away the honours with the
Indian Wall - Rahul Dravid scoring majestic
centuries in both the innings, well supported by
rookie wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik who scored a
brilliant 93 in the 2nd innings. Anil Kumble
came up with another lion-hearted performance
wiping out the Pakistanis in the 2nd innings
leading India to a memorable win.
It's now time for the 3rd
and Final Test at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in
Bangalore and it's a
karo ya maro situation for Pakistan.
Inzamam who would be representing Pakistan for
the 100th time in Test Cricket (4th Pakistani to
do so after Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram & Salim
Malik) would like to end the series with a win
in this Test. With hours left for the Final Test
to begin, Cricketfundas.com presents a
Statistical Preview for all its viewers.
The pitch at the Chinnaswamy Stadium has always
been good for the batsmen with some assistance
for the spinners towards Day 4 and Day 5. Till
date, this stadium has hosted 15 Tests out of
which 9 have produced results, which means that
the probability of getting a result has been in
the range of around 60%.
The toss has been a crucial factor at this venue
and of the 15 tests played here, on 14 occasions
the team winning the toss has elected to bat
first. This Stadium hasn't been a happy hunting
ground for the Indians, as they have tasted
victory in just 4 games out of the 15 that they
have played here. The last time that the Indians
won a test here was way back in 1995 against the
Kiwis, where they went on to secure an 8-wicket
victory thanks to skipper Mohammad Azharuddin.
To make matters worse for the Indians, they have
lost 3 (twice to Australia and once to South
Africa) and drawn one in the last 4 matches
played here. The last match played here was
between India and Australia in October 2004-05,
which Australia went on to win by a comfortable
margin of 217 runs.

The Cricketing World has just seen 3 Indo-Pak
encounters at the Chinnaswamy Stadium and
surprisingly Pakistan have had the best of the
hosts. In the 3 matches played here, India has
lost once to Pakistan and has managed to draw on
the other 2 occasions. The only victory for
Pakistan here came in 1986/87 when India
suffered a narrow 16 run defeat thanks to superb
bowling by Iqbal Quasim and Tauseef Ahmed.

The defeat at Kolkata might see Pakistan coming
up with a change or two for the final Test.
Taufeeq Umar who has displayed poor technique in
both the Tests might make way for either of
Salman Butt or Yasir Hameed. Naved-ul-Hasan who
is returning from injury is likely to replace
the left arm speedster Mohammad Khalil who was
far from being impressive impressive at Kolkata.
The Bangalore wicket has been a friendly wicket
for the spinners rather than the pacers.
Maninder Singh rocked the Pakistani batsmen with
figures of 7/27 in 1986-87, while Harbhajan
Singh ended up with impressive match figures of
11/224 against the Aussies recently though India
ended up losing on both the occasions. Anil
Kumble has relished the conditions at Bangalore
which is very well proved by the 34 wickets that
he has taken at this venue at an average which
is just less than 25.

The Indian batsmen have shown good form
especially in the last Test where almost
everybody got among the runs except for the
Indian Captain. But when it comes to Bangalore,
the Indian Batsmen have fared miserably apart
from Sachin Tendulkar, who is the only batsman
to have scored a century at Bangalore amongst the
current batsmen. Sachin who was defied a chance
of reaching his 35th century at Kolkata by Steve
Bucknor, would be eager to achieve that feat on
a ground which has been quite lucky for him. He
has piled up 439 runs in 5 matches at this venue
with a highest score of 177 (It's the highest
individual score at Chinnaswamy Stadium) which
came against the Aussies in 1998. Rahul Dravid
on the contrary has been abysmal to say the
least at his home ground with just 127 runs in
the 4 Tests that he has played here.
