from the Test Squad |

Sri Lankan Selectors gave a
shock on Friday by dropping their star batsman
Sanath
Jayasuriya from the
Test Squad for the 3-Tests Series against India.
The thirty six year old Sanath Jayasuriya and
Sri Lanka have had a bad tour of India having
lost 5 of the 6 ODIs so far on the 7 ODIs
Series. This is the first time in 10 years that
Sanath has been dropped from the Sri Lankan Test
Squad which truly implies the value he has been
to the Sri Lankan team in Tests or One Dayers.
Jayasuriya scored a record 340 against India in
1997 at R.P.S, Colombo. Age hasn't been on the
Matara Blaster's side and he had a bad shoulder
injury which has restricted him from bowling his
cunning slow left arm orthodox spin regularly.
Poor form and fitness problems were given as the
reasons for dropping Jayasuriya. The Selectors
have also axed Mahela Jayawardene from the Vice
Captain post and have gone in for all rounder
Chaminda Vaas as the deputy to skipper Marvan
Atapattu. In the bowling department, left arm
spinner
Rangana
Herath,
Upul
Chandana,
Nuwan
Zoysa have been
shown the exit door. Sri Lanka have blooded few
youngsters in Chamara Kapugedara, a teenage
opening bat and 27 year old left arm spinner
Sajeewa Weerakoon along with Malinga Bandara,
the leg spinner.
The India-Sri Lanka Test
Series begins on the 2nd December at the
M.A.Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The 2nd and
3rd Tests are to be played at Delhi and Kanpur
respectively.
