Sri Lanka's
Chandana announces retirement |
Upul Chandana, one of the
regulars in successful Sri Lankan One Day Units
during the late 90s has announced his retirement
from International Cricket. Like former Skipper
Marvan Atapattu, Chandana has informed the Sri
Lankan Cricket Board about his decision. It is
likely that Chandana might sign up with the
Indian Cricket League. However, reports are that
his decision comes to the disappointment of not
getting selected during the World Cup and this
month's Twenty20 World Championship.
Chandana has also stated
according to Media Reports that he hasn't been
approached by the ICL. But that he would have a
thought about it once given an offer. The
legspinner had lost his place most recently
because of another legspinner Malinga Bandara,
who has done really well for Sri Lanka. Upul
Chandana is just 35 years old but his
International Debut goes way back to 1993/94!
The leggie has a wire-thin physique but does
pack a lot of punch in his shots. It is another
matter that he has underachieved as an
International Cricket with both ball and the
bat. He was also known for his speed and the
brilliant fielding abilities both in the infield
and the outfield.
Upul played in 16 Tests taking
37 wickets along with two half centuries. His
Test Debut came only six years after making his
ODI Debut at Sharjah. It is the limited overs
format that he has found more success with 151
wickets in 147 matches with five fifties. With
career best of 92 in Tests and 89 in ODIs, he
definitely had enough talent with the bat as
well. That was perhaps the reason why he even
got to play for English County Gloucestershire
in 2005.
