The
Sri Lankan Selectors headed by Asantha de Mel
have picked their squad for next month's World
Cup without many surprises. Most of the players
who are on the India tour have retained their
places. The experienced bowlers - Chaminda Vaas
and Muttiah Muralitharan have returned to the
side for the World Cup.
The axe has fallen onto leg
spinning all rounder -
Upul Chandana
and left arm medium pacer -
Nuwan Zoysa. Also
missing in the side are teenage middle order bat
Chamara
Kapugedera and left arm medium pacer,
Ruchira Perera.
Russel Arnold, a veteran of 167 ODIs till date
has been persisted with although he hasn't been
a regular member of the squad recently. All
rounder Nuwan Kulasekara, who didn't look top
class in the 2nd ODI against India has also been
selected. Sri Lanka's cricket has been going in
the upward direction of late ever since the 1-6
drubbing they had received against India under
the leadership of Marvan Atapattu.
Sri Lanka are placed in Group B
along with India. The other three teams are
minnows - Bangladesh and Bermuda. The Lankans'
first game is against Bermuda on the 15th of
March.
