It's going, going and gone! (India Vs Sri Lanka, 1st ODI at Vidarbha Cricket Association Ground, Nagpur)

By B.V.Swagath, published on Oct 25, 2005

As the title suggests this feature would bring you all the sixes scored during this match. Fourteen sixes hit in today's match, that's called One Day Cricket and that's what the Junta loves! Ok here we go...

Indian Batting : 9 Sixes (54 runs scored from sixes in a total of 350)

5.2 Dilhara Fernando, who had replaced the expensive Farveez Maharoof, bowled an inswinger which was nicely drifting onto the pads of Sachin. Tendulkar would have turned it down to square leg softly and run hard for a couple as he has been in the recent past. But that wasn’t the case today at all. Sachin has decided who the Master is on the ground and he waited for the ball to swing in and then with his powerful wrists lifted it over mid wicket for a six! That’s the first six of the match, are we witnessing the real comeback of the Master Blaster? We will have to wait and see if that was just one calculated hit or few more to follow from the big MRF blade!

8.3 Vaas to new man Irfan Pathan, the umpire has shouted ‘no ball’ but whether Irfan Pathan had heard it before the ball has been delivered is not really known to us. But the way he picked the ball on the rise and the manner in which he hit that for a fantastic six over mid wicket…may be may be he might have heard the call early and had gone for the shot. Nevertheless the wicket looks perfect for all those “play through the line shots”. And yeah the pinch hitter is getting along his job assigned…isn’t it?

21.3 Irfan who has now got the confidence decided to send Tillakaratne Dilshan into the stands. He does that in style with a huge lofted straight drive. Wow that’s a great shot and that’s how a part timer like Dilshan needs to be treated. Having said that, this shot from Pathan would have made even the masters of the lofted shots proud! And by the way Pathan is in a hurry to reach his 3rd fifty as he takes his score from 43 to 49.

23.2 It’s Chandana’s first over and there he goes! Pathan puts on the dancing shoes and comes down the track and that’s a King Shot! A very very big lofted off drive and he’s now going to make Chandana forget his little leg breaks!

23.5 He’s not going to stop his exercise of lofting the ball for 4s and 6s! If the last six was a big one then this six over long on is a long way bigger than that one! Was that six a gift for the Urvasis and Menakas and other beauties in the Heaven? Of course we are talking about Irfan Pathan and his continuous assault on Upul Chandana. That ball was pitched on middle and the left hander hits it with the turn and not to forget that the ball was lost, the 4th umpire who was relaxing till now needs to run down quickly with another set of balls.

25.2 Dilshan to Tendulkar, comes down the wicket in a flash and that’s a thumping six over long on! Take that Dilshan, the Tendulkar whom you foxed during the Asia Cup was just a duplicate of the real man here.

46.3 Chaminda Vaas to Mahendra Singh Dhoni, that full toss has been hoiked over mid wicket for a six! A very clean hit for six, of course no doubt about that, when Dhoni hits the cricket ball that well then you know where it ends up!

46.6 Chaminda Vaas bowls his normal away going delivery and Dravid plays the cover drive not on the ground but in the air and the ball comfortably goes over the ropes! That was as sweet as the Kissan Jam, beautiful timing, an amazing cricketing shot. Dravid made that look very easy by making room and going inside out, good improvisation too.

47.1 Onto his legs and the Reebok bat bludgeons that out of the ground between mid wicket and long on. Dhoni of course is the batsman and we gotta rename him as Sixer Dhoni a title which has now passed onto him from Sixer Sidhu.

Sri Lanka batting : 5 Sixes (30 runs from sixes out of a total of 198)

4.5 Great improvisation, not a bad ball from Pathan but Sangakkara comes down the track and clears his front leg out of the way and smacks that over long on for the 1st six of the Sri Lankan innings. The Sri Lankan train seems to be getting in the race now.

7.5 Agarkar with his inswing to the left hander, not a good line at all and easy pickings for Sangakkara! That’s an easy sixer for Sanga on the leg side. Can Sangakkara control his adrenalin flow and make a big hundred? Kya rey Sanga kya karney wala hey tu?

16.2 Tillakaratne Dilshan had enough of blocking the slow bowlers; he comes down the track and lifts Harbhajan for a super six over his head. Well bowled by Harbhajan, one shot too many and it could be the downfall of the batsmen but they need to go for their big shots if they have to come close to 350.

29.3 Turn of Lokuhettige to show his hitting talent and here he goes launches into the left arm spin of Murali Kartik to hit him into the long on stands.

32.4 Sehwag to Lokuhettige and the right hander charges down the track intending to hit it for an almighty six! But he’s beaten in the flight but he goes with his shot and drags it over mid wicket with his bottom hand and clears the ground! He’s a strong man too. He must be an Arnold…not Russel Arnold though.
