Sri Lankans romp to a 6-wicket win over Derby |
May 1, 2006
Sri Lanka romped to a 6-wicket win over
Derbyshire at the County Groundy in Derby in
their second 3-day tour match. Having won the
toss, the homeside batted first and were bundled
out for 219 with Lasith Malinga and Muttiah
Muralitharan taking three wickets each. Infact,
Derbyshire had a promising start of 88 for the
1st wicket after which they collapsed in a heap.
Lasith Malinga bowled 20 overs to capture three
wickets for 59 and spin wizard Muralitharan
bowled 30 overs to take 3 for 37. In reply, Sri
Lankans were off to a poor start losing its
openers Upul Tharanga and Michael Vandort with
just 10 runs on the board. Sri Lankans then
slipped to a pathetic 69 for 5 and were partly
rescued by the pair of Chamara Kapugedera and
Farveez Maharoof with both of them scoring
valuable forties. Skipper Mahela Jayawardene who
came in at no.8 remained unbeaten on 17 and just
after the wicket of Farveez Maharoof fell, the
Sri Lankans declared their innings at 166 for 7
conceding a lead of 53 runs.
Derbyshire who were equally sportive scored runs
at a fair clip to collect 208 in 44 overs
leaving a target of 262 for the tourists.
Opening batsman Chris Taylor and middle order
batsman Travis Birt made well stroked half
centuries. Farveez Maharoof got plenty of stick
as he was smashed for 59 in his 10 overs. Sri
Lankans' 2nd innings was off to a solid start
with Tharanga getting out with the score at 60.
The good work of Tharanga was carried by Kumar
Sangakkara and he along with Michael Vandort
added 86 for the 2nd wicket and that put Sri
Lanka on a solid platform to win this match. In
the end Vandort combined with Kapugedera to
guide the tourists to a smooth victory. Vandort
was unbeaten on 90 and Kapugedera made a
powerpacked 44 which included a six as well. Sri
Lankans pulled off the win in little over 58
overs. Overnight rain had delayed the start of
play on the final day and Derbyshire declared
their innings to leave just 60 overs for the Sri
Lankans to achieve this target.
