Sri Lanka take the Twenty 20 ODI
by just 2 runs |
June 16, 2006
Sri Lanka won its Debut Twenty 20 International
Match against England at The Rose Bowl in
Southampton. The visitors edged out England by 2
runs in the Only Twenty 20 International after
putting on an impressive 163 in their allotted
20 overs. England’s opening batsman Marcus
Treschothick’s brilliant onslaught of a 58
ball-72 went in vain as England could not wrap
up the match after the left hander was run out
in the 19th over by Sangakkara. After
Trescothick was gone, England required 12 runs
from 8 deliveries and the pair of Geraint Jones
and Tim Bresnan failed in achieving the target.
England could muster just 8 runs in the next 7
balls and eventually required a boundary from
new comer Tim Bresnan off the last ball of the
final over bowled by Dilhara Fernando.
Trescothick was the top scorer from both the
sides and his innings had contained 9 fours and
a six coming off Tillakaratne Dilshan. For Sri
Lanka, Dilhara Fernando bowled well giving away
just 22 runs in his 4 overs quota and he had
removed Andrew Strauss, who was giving England a
splendid start with his 21 ball-33. Sanath
Jayasuriya had taken two wickets including the
big wicket of Kevin Pietersen.
Jayasuriya and Tharanga put on a beautiful
opening stand of 75 for the 1st wicket in just
under 8 overs. Paul Collingwood with his
military medium pace got England back into the
game by picking both these openers and the run
rate for Sri Lanka started to go down with some
good bowling. Wickets fell at regular intervals
for the visitors who were looking to score as
many as possible and they got bowled out in
exactly 20 overs for 163. Collingwood was the
stand out bowler with 4 wickets for just 22 in
his overs but his failure with the bat in the
later half of the match meant that the Man of
the Match award had gone to Sanath Jayasuriya
for his all round show.
After a day’s gap, both teams meet again at
Lord’s for the 1st of the five ODIs of the
NatWest Series at Lord’s.
