Bacher makes a comeback into the South African Squad

Jan 25th, 2005:

Batsman Adam Bacher has been recalled to the South Africa one-day-international squad for the first time in eight years for the opening four matches of the Standard Bank series against England.

Bacher, who played his last ODI against Australia in Sydney in January 1998, has been rewarded for his outstanding consistency over the past few years. Having finished last season as the Standard Bank Cup Player of the Year, Bacher has continued that form this campaign, scoring 502 runs in 10 matches for the Highveld Lions, at an average of 62.75 and a strike rate of 80.96.

Andrew Hall, Ashwell Prince, Justin Kemp and Andre Nel have returned to the 15-man squad as well while Test newcomer AB de Villiers has also been included. Martin van Jaarsveld, Lance Klusener, JP Duminy, Alan Dawson and Robin Peterson are the men to miss out.

South Africa meet England in seven one-day internationals, the first of which takes place at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on Sunday, January 30.

South African Squad: Graeme Smith (captain), Nicky Boje (vice-captain), Adam Bacher, Mark Boucher (wicketkeeper), AB de Villiers, Herschelle Gibbs, Andrew Hall, Jacques Kallis, Justin Kemp, Charl Langeveldt, Andre Nel, Makhaya Ntini, Ashwell Prince, Shaun Pollock, Jacques Rudolph.
