South Africa have sealed the three-match series
against hosts Zimbabwe with an unassailable 2-0
lead with an eight-wicket win at Harare.
Herschelle Gibbs, who was rested in the first
ODI at Bulawayo, cracked his 17th ODI century as
the Proteas cruised to a target of 248 with 65
balls to spare.
Zimbabwe put to bat first by
Graeme Smith had put on a decent 247 for 7 on
the board. None of the batsmen went onto make a
big score but two batsmen got half centuries and
another two got forties to put up some sort of a
total. Middle order bats Sean Williams with 54
from 50 and Matsikenyeri with 52 from 51 were
responsible for a late flourish from the
Zimbabweans. Earlier a sort of a platform was
created by no.3 Brendan Taylor (44 from 84 balls
) and former Captain Tatenda Taibu, who made 43
from 40. The most successful bowler for SA was
Dale Steyn who had come in as the no.4 change
bowler taking 3 for 65 in 10 overs.
The South Africans were powered
by a smashing opening stand of 174 in just 28.2
overs from Skipper Graeme Smith and Herschelle
Gibbs. Smith missed his century by just four
runs with his runs coming in 99 balls with 11
fours and two sixes. Gibbs was the only other
batsman to be dismissed with his wicket going
down with just the two runs to win. Gibbs made
111 in 100 balls with 16 fours and two sixes.
