Chaminda Vaas to
miss the first test |
July 26, 2006
Sri Lanka’s experienced left arm pacer
Chaminda Vaas will not be playing in the 1st
Test match against South Africa which starts
from tomorrow. The 32-year-old is yet to recover
fully from his hamstring injury that he had
sustained during the recently concluded England
tour. According to the Sri Lankan Team
Management, Vaas has started bowling since the
last three days and it was felt that the left
armer should be allowed enough time to get back
to full fitness. Sri Lanka wouldn’t be all that
worried with Vaas’ absence as its young pace
bowlers - Lasith Malinga, Dilhara Fernando and
Farveez Maharoof have sharpened their skills in
the recent times. Sri Lanka has made changes to
its 14-member squad which is now cut to 12 with
the names of
Michael Vandort, left arm spinner
Rangana Herath
and Chaminda Vaas being taken off. The Lankans
have decided to allow Kumar Sangakkara to
concentrate only on his batting by including the
26-year-old specialist wicket keeper Prasanna
Jayawardene who had played 5 Tests and 3 ODIs so
far for Sri Lanka. Most probably, Chamara
Kapugedera will be the unlucky one to do the
12th man duties with Sri Lanka going with the
two specialist spinners in Murali and Malinga
Bandara. The Lankans would be starting as the
favourites in this 1st Test Match that is going
to be played at the Sinhalese Sports Club in
Colombo.
