Sanath Jayasuriya
gets selected in the Test Squad |
July 26, 2006
Veteran all rounder Sanath Jayasuriya has been
retained in the 14-member Test Squad for the 1st
Test Match against South Africa which begins on
the 27th. Jayasuriya who had announced his
retirement during the Kandy Test against
Pakistan was asked to come out of his retirement
to play on the England tour and he got to play
the third test match at Nottingham. The
37-year-old might be used as an opening batsman
this time around and not as a lower middle order
bat. Sanath is getting a fight from Michael
Vandort for the opening slot and the latter is
the third opener selected in the squad along
with Upul Tharanga. Middle order batsman Chamara
Kapugedera and the entire bowling line up that
did well in England has been retained. The only
addition to the Sri Lankan bowling is left arm
spinner, Rangana Herath who has injured his knee
during the warm up game against the Proteas.
Sajeewa Weerakoon, another left arm spinner has
been named as the standby for Herath.
