Ashwell ‘Prince’ becomes Ashwell
‘King’ as Smith gets ruled out of Lanka Series
|
July 12, 2006
South
Africa’s Skipper
Graeme Smith had an unfortunate slip during
his running session which has led to two torn
ligaments in his ankle. Graeme Smith has been
ruled out of the upcoming Sri Lanka Series that
starts from the month end. South Africa had
already lost Jacques Kallis due to a rehab
program for his tennis elbow and had he been
available, he would have been the obvious choice
for getting the Skipper’s role. All this has
resulted in the making of history with Ashwell
Prince named as the first black skipper of the
South African Test Side. Left handed middle
order bat, Jacques Rudolph who was originally
not selected in the squad for giving place to
the uncapped off spinner Thandi Tshabalala has
been named as the replacement for Graeme Smith.
The extent of Smith’s injury is yet to be known
and there is no news about the number of weeks
he would take to get back to full fitness. The
first Test between Sri Lanka and South Africa
starts on the 27th of this month in Colombo.
