Dean Jones fired
by Ten Sports for ‘terrorist’ comment on Hashim
Amla |
August 08, 2006
Former Australian batsman and TV Commentator,
Dean Jones has been
sacked by his employer, Ten Sports, after he had
referred to South African batsman,
Hashim Amla as
‘terrorist’ on live television coverage of the
fourth day’s
play of the 2nd Test Match between Sri Lanka
and South Africa. Dean Jones had a serious slip
of the tongue in his commentary stint when he
was heard saying “the terrorist has got another
wicket” after Hashim Amla fielding at point had
taken the catch of Kumar Sangakkara. Hashim Amla
is a devout muslim with a flowing beard and he
doesn't sport the
alcohol logo (Castle Lager, the official sponsor
of the South African Cricket Team) on his cricketing
gear, and this is for sure a testament to the
fact that religion comes first for him. The
South African Cricket Board has taken strong
objection to Dean Jones' one liner and has said
that the matter will be discussed with the ICC.
The 45-year-old, Dean Jones has admitted that it
was a silly comment to make and he did not mean
to offend Hashim Amla. The broadcasting channel,
Ten Sports had released a statement apologizing
about the incident and their stand on zero
tolerance against racism.
