Full Scorecard
It was a comprehensive victory for the Indians
as they thrashed the South Africans by 8 wickets
on the 5th and final day at the Eden Gardens at
Kolkata.
Earlier in the day resuming at 172/5, South
Africa lost Jacques Kallis very early to
Harbhajan caught of his own bowling after
scoring 55. Pollock was the next to go caught at
forward short leg by Gambhir of Harbhajan, but
the replays clearly showed that the ball had no
contact with the bat and the catch taken seemed
to have been one bounce. Two balls later Ontong
went for an expansive sweep but only managed to
give a catch to keeper Dinesh Karthik after the
ball brushed his gloves. Tsolekile was out to a
unplayable delivery of Kumble which broke
through his defenses to crash into the stumps.
Ntini and Zander De Bruyn managed to take the
South African lead into the 3 figures, but they
didn't last long as Anil Kumble came on par with
Kapil dev for his 434th wicket in the form of
Makhaya Ntini caught by Dravid at first slip.
Requiring just 117 runs to win, the Indians got
off to a bad start. Sehwag who was suffering
from cold and fever earlier in the morning, was
dismissed by Ntini caught by Smith at slip. The
Indian wall Rahul Dravid spent some time in the
middle along with Gambhir for a decent
partnership before Gambhir was out lbw to the
part time bowling of Jacques Rudolph.
Tendulkar who looked edgy in the 1st innings
decided to make amends as looked confident to
see India through. The only six of
the Indian Innings came when Sachin came down the track
to Justin Ontong and hit him over long on for a
huge six. Sachin hit the winning runs in grand
style with a four towards the deep mid-wicket
boundary. Rahul Dravid top scored for the
Indians with an unbeaten 47 as India wrapped up
the Series 1-0. Harbhajan Singh was awarded the Man of the Match
for taking 9 wickets in the match which included
the match winning figures of 7/87 in the 2nd
Innings. Virender Sehwag was awarded the Man of
the Series for his splendid performances with
the bat throughout the series.
The Indians play their next series against
Bangladesh which starts in a week from now,
whereas the Proteas go back home to play
England.
Day 4 - December 1st, 2004
South Africa 305 & 172/5 (Smith 71
Kallis 52*, H Singh 4/58) lead India
411 (Sehwag 88 Dravid 80, Ntini 4/112) by
66 runs
South Africa ended Day 4 with a lead of just 66
runs over India with 5 wickets in hand in the
2nd Test at Kolkata.
Earlier in the day, the Indians resuming at
359/6 lost Pathan very early caught by Smith of
the bowling of Ntini. Kumble didn't last long
too as he got out giving Ntini his 4th wicket
for the Innings. Dinesh Karthik was unlucky not
to get to his 50, as he was caught plumb in
front of Pollock for a well made 46. Harbhajan
and Zaheer took India past the 400 mark but
couldn't go long as Harbhajan gifted his wicket
to Ontong who got his first test wicket.
The South Africans got off to a great start
powered by Smith and Hall who looked in fine
touch. They put on 77 runs for the 1st wicket
before the Turbanator was successful in
dismissing Hall for 21 which included 3 fours
and a six. Rudolph didn't last long as he tried
to leave an arm ball of Harbhajan which struck
his pad and was given out leg before wicket.
Kallis and Smith put on 45 runs for the 3rd
wicket and looked good for a big total when
Smith edged Harbhajan and Laxman at slip plucked
the ball out of thin air. The 4th wicket came in
the form of Hashim Amla who was caught by Laxman
giving Harbhajan his 4th wicket. Dippenaar was
the next to go caught by Sehwag after the ball
deflected from keeper Karthik's leg of the
bowling of Kumble giving him his 432nd wicket.
Kallis and Zander De Bruyn took South Africa to
172/5 at the end of the Day with Kallis unbeaten
on 52 and De Bruyn on 9.
Day 3 - November 30th, 2004
South Africa 305 trail India
359/6 (Sehwag 88 Dravid 80, De Bruyn 2/32) by
54 runs
India have taken a tiny lead of 54 runs with 4
wickets in hand at the end of Day 3 in the 2nd
Test against South Africa at Kolkata.
Resuming at 129/1, Sehwag and Dravid continued
from where they had left off overnight, as
Sehwag opened his account for the day with a six
straight down the ground. But, that was the only
scoring shot for the day for Sehwag as he got
ducking to a bouncer from Ntini which caught his
gloves and went to Smith who completed an easy
catch. Tendulkar was very edgy to start off with
and he too couldn't last long as he was
dismissed for 20 when he dragged the ball onto
his stumps. Dravid was dismissed for a well made
80 by Andhrew Hall, when he too like Tendulkar
dragged the ball onto his stumps. The Prince of
Kolkata looked in supreme form and he raced to
40 of 73 balls which included five majestic
strokes to the fence. He was unlucky to be given
out by Umpire Simon Taufel leg before wicket to
De Bruyn as replays suggested that the ball had
pitched outside the leg stump and also hit his
pads outside leg stump.
The Post Tea Session saw Laxman gifting a catch
to Ontong of the bowling of Makhaya Ntini for
38. Pathan then joined Dinesh Karthik and both
of them carried on slowly till the end of the
day and made sure that the South Africans didn't
take any more wickets. India finally closed Day
3 at 359/6 which meant a lead of 54 runs with
Karthik unbeaten on 35 and Pathan on 21.
Day 2 - November 29th, 2004
South Africa 305 (Jacques Kallis
121, Pathan 3/72 Z Khan 3/64) lead India
129/1 (Sehwag 82* Dravid 33*) by 176 runs
Day 2 of the 2nd Test between India and South
Africa totally belonged to India as they
dismissed South Africa for 305 and replied back
with a strong 129/1.
Resuming at 227/5, South Africa lost Zander De
Bruyn earlier in the day who edged an unplayable
Zaheer Khan delivery into the hands of Dinesh
Karthik. Kallis added just 16 runs to his
overnight score of 105 before he was dismissed
by an absolute beauty from skipper Ganguly which
jagged back onto the stumps as Kallis tried to
leave it alone. The first wicket for spinners on
the Kolkata track came in the form of Pollock
who edged Kumble into the hands of Dravid at
slip. The post lunch session saw Harbhajan Singh
packing off the remaining 2 batsmen in the same
over as South Africa were bowled out for 305.
The Indian openers did not have the best of
starts as Gambhir was caught plumb in front when
he tried to play across the line to Shaun
Pollock. The Indian vice captain Rahul Dravid
came in at the score of 17/1. Both Dravid and
Sehwag were slow to start off with, but once
they got settled they took the South African
bowlers to the cleaners. Sehwag in one
particular over scored 18 runs of Ontong which
included a hoike over deep midwicket which went
over the fence. Indians finished the day at
129/2 with Sehwag unbeaten on 82 while Dravid
was on 33.
Day 1 - November 28th, 2004
South Africa 227/5 (Jacques Kallis
103* Jacques Rudolph 61, Pathan 3/61)
South Africa ended Day 1 of the 1st Test
between India and South Africa at Kolkata at
227/5 with Kallis scoring his 17th Test Century.
Earlier in the day, the South African Captain
Greame Smith won the toss again and elected to bat
first on the Eden Garden Pitch which as usual
assists both the spinners as well as the pacers.
South Africa went in with Hashim Amla in place
of Martin van Jaarsveld. For India, Irfan Pathan
replaced Murali Kartik.
The South Africans got off to a bad start as
Irfan Pathan had the South African captain
caught behind by Karthik in the very first over
of the Innings. Andrew Hall, the Man of the
Match at Kanpur didn't sustain long as he was
dismissed by Zaheer Khan who induced an edge of
his willow into the hands of Karthik. Jacques
Kallis and Jacques Rudolph didn't allow the
Indian bowlers to dominate, as they confidently
defended themselves against the pace of Zaheer
and Pathan followed by the spin of Kumble and
Harbhajan. The post lunch session saw both
Kallis and Rudolph score runs at a quicker rate
as both the spinners Harbhajan and Kumble went
wicketless. Zaheer finally broke the 109 run
stand between Rudolph and Kallis when he had the
stumps of Rudolph shattered to a beautiful
delivery.
The dismissal of Rudolph meant that Hashim
Amla made his Test Debut in front of the much
awaited Indian fans. He got off to a confident
start, but he could not carry long as he was
clean bowled by Pathan for 24. Dippenaar didn't
last long as he was caught behind by Dinesh
Karthik again of Pathan. Kallis continued
strongly as he went on to score his 17th Test
Century with a boundary of Pathan. The duo of
Kallis and Zander de Bruyn put on 45 runs for
the 6th wicket before bad light suspended the
day's play. Kallis was unbeaten on 103 while de
Bruyn was not out on 15 at Stumps.
