Kallis joins
Sober’s unique club of 8000 runs and 200
wickets! |
May 7, 2006
Jacques Kallis on Saturday took his 200th
Test wicket in the form of Stephen Fleming to
become the only player after Sir Garifield
Sobers to achieve the rare double of 8000 runs
and 200 wickets. Kallis picked up his 199th
wicket by getting Michael Papps to edge his late
outswinger in the 1st session of Day 2 of the
3rd and final Test Match at Johannesburg. The
South African all rounder got to the 200-mark
after lunch as Stephen Fleming, who was playing
quiet a few expansive drives played one shot too
many and as Kallis slanted it away across the
left hander with a hint of away movement, the
outside edge resulted from Fleming’s blade which
was snapped up by AB de Villiers in the slips.
Kallis who is playing his 102nd Test Match had
crossed the 8000 runs mark in the drawn Test
Match at Cape Town during his knock of 71. The
30-year-old had made his Test Match Debut
against England during the 3rd Test of the 1995
Series at Durban. Interestingly, Jacques Kallis
1st Test wicket was taken at the same ground
where he had taken his 200th wicket that is the
New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. His 1st
scalp was Steven Waugh who edged Kallis behind
the stumps to wicket keeper Dave Richardson
after making a terrific 160. Kallis’ first
hundred in Test Match cricket had come against
the Australians during the opening Test Match at
Mebourne in the 1997/98 Series. The all rounder
had to wait till the 1998/99 season to pick up
his 1st 5-wicket haul, which he took in the 5th
Test Match against West Indies at Centurion.
Till date the all rounder has hit 24 hundreds
and has 4 five wicket hauls in Tests. Garry
Sobers on the other hand had scored 26 hundreds
and had taken 6 five wicket hauls in just the 93
Tests he played.
