The Catch that
won the match |
|
A Tribute to Sachin Tendulkar by Bhavya
Kumar Vasudevan
Sachin Tendulkar again proved to be a very
important member of the team, not just when it
comes to batting, but also when it comes to
fielding.
The blinder of a catch that the Master took to
get rid of the dangerous Inzamam Ul Haq, was
termed by most professionals the decisive moment
that turned the match into India's favour. The
ball was struck with such force, and Sachin had
to move to his wrong side so quickly that, had
he blinked an eye lid the ball would have passed
him. Even after completing a stunning catch, his
job was not done. He had to make sure that he
did not lose balance as he was very close to the
boundary rope.
The joy that erupted out of Sachin was a
moment that every Sachin's fan would remember
for his entire life. I have not seen Sachin
being so expressive after taking a catch. This
catch had to be special, not only because it was
Inzamam's wicket, also because this was catch
number 100 for Sachin in ODI cricket. I can
easily say that this was the most important
catch of his life, as the future of the most
important game for India since the 83 World Cup
final depended on it. Having removed Inzamam
with that catch India's victory was almost
assured.
Although Sachin did not get a big score in a
big final, he definately seemed to be
comfortable while batting. Although, there might
be critics doubting his abilities in big finals,
there will not be one person who will now say,
that he cannot perform when it matters. Not with
the bat this time, but with this catch, he
turned the match on its head.
Finally, about the victory, I am a proud Indian.
Crackers bursting on every street in India,
people celebrating the victory, there has never
been this kind of celebration since the World
Cup 83. I hope India can continue the same form
into the Test Series and give the people of
India one more chance to celebrate.
