Ranji Trophy 2004/05: Plate Group - 5th Round Summary

The Fifth and Final Round of the League Matches in the Plate Round got underway on the 22nd of December. Here is a review of the matches that took place on the 22nd of December to the 25th of December at various venues across the country.

 

 

Orissa Vs Saurashtra at Rajkot

 

After conceding 4 points to Jharkhand last week, Orissa went to Rajkot to face Saurashtra. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Saurashtra were able to put just 160 runs on the board, with wicket-keeper Jogiyani top scoring with 39. Mohanty was the wrecker-in-chief for Orissa, with figures of 6/50. In reply, Orissa were powered to 349 with a century from Pravanjan Mullick and a 96 from Parida. Jobanputra ended up with figures of 6/126 for Saurashtra. With a hefty lead of 189 over them, Saurashtra never looked comfortable as the toppled down for just 245, with captain JN Shah top scoring with 77. Mohanty was again among the wickets with figures of 3/41. With just 57 runs required for victory, Orissa did it with utmost ease as they registered a comprehensive 10-wicket victory. This win put them on par with Jharkhand for the 2nd place in the points table.

 

Saurashtra 160 (Mohanty 6/50) & 245 (JN Shan 77) lost to Orissa 349 (Mullick 123 Parida 96) & 57/0 (Das 42*) by 10 wickets

 

 

Kerala Vs Jammu & Kashmir at Palakkad

 

After losing to Himachal Pradesh last week, Jammu & Kashmir went to face Kerala this week at Palakkad. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Kerala put up an impressive 319 on the board powered by brilliant 132 by skipper SR Nair. Abid Nabi was impressive for Jammu and Kashmir with figures of 4/83. Jammu & Kashmir in reply, managed just 140 with a notable 78 coming from skipper Mahajan's bat. Suresh Kumar took 4 wickets for 25 runs. Kerala in their 2nd Innings declared at 281/7 with the skipper performing again with a crucial knock of 92. Chasing 461 for an improbable victory, Jammu & Kashmir were bowled out for 299, as veteran Ananthapadmanabhan ripped through them with figures of 5/51. Kerala with this victory ended up at 5th place in Group A and Jammu & Kashmir finished at the last place.

 

Kerala 319 (SR Nair 132, Nabi 4/83) & 281/7 (SR Nair 92 S Oasis 73) defeated Jammu & Kashmir 140 (Mahajan 78, S Kumar 4/25) & 299 (Sajjad 79, A'padmanabhan 5/51) by 161 runs

 

 

Himachal Pradesh Vs Jharkhand at Jamshedpur

 

Having reserved their place in the semis already, Himachal Pradesh faced Jharkhand this week at Jamshedpur. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Himachal Pradesh were bowled out for 275, as Panda chipped in with impressive figures of 4/55. Maninder Bisla top scored for Himachal Pradesh with 135. Jharkhand in reply managed just 218, thanks to a 5-wkt haul from VS Malik. S Panda top scored with an unbeaten 83. Himachal Pradesh in their 2nd Innings were skittled out for a paltry 120, leaving Jharkhand a target of 178 to achieve. Jharkhand in reply looked jittery from the start itself, as they were bowled out for just 155, thanks to figures of 5/28 and 4/42 from V Bhatia and AK Thakur respectively. Himachal Pradesh thus with this 22 runs victory, finished at the top of the Group A table, while Jharkhand finished 2nd thus qualifying for the semis.

 

Himachal Pradesh 275 (MS Bisla 135, Panda 4/55) & 120 (Diwakar 3/45, Rao 3/47) defeated Jharkhand 218 (Panda 83*, Malik 5/30) & 155 (V Bhatia 5/28 AK Thakur 4/42) by 22 runs

 

 

Tripura Vs Goa at Agartala

 

After losing to Services last week, Tripura played hosts to Goa at Agartala this week. Goa after winning the toss and electing to bat first, put 278 runs on the board, powered by a brilliant 99 from skipper Asnodkar. S Roy took 6/60 for Tripura. Tripura in reply were bundled out for just 211, thanks to Aware and Dani who took 4 wickets each. Goa in their 2nd Innings, managed to score just 190 runs for the loss of 8 wickets as the match ended in a tame draw. Goa earned 2 points thanks to the 1st Innings lead and finished 5th in Group B, where as Tripura finished at the last place.

 

Goa 278 (Asnodkar 99, Roy 6/60) & 190/8 (Saha 5/65) drew with Tripura 211 (Prasanna 65, Aware 4/43 Dani 4/63)

 

 

Services Vs Vidarbha at Delhi

 

After losing to Haryana last week, Vidarbha went to Delhi to play Services in a battle for the 2nd position. Services after winning the toss and electing to field bowled out Vidarbha for just 184, with a top score of 86* from AS Naidu. Sharma and Yashpal Singh were impressive for Services with 4 wickets each. Services in reply scored 368 thanks to notable contributions from MP Reddy, A Sharma and F Mohammed. Preetam Gandhe ended up with figures of 4/101. Vidarbha in their 2nd Innings scored 50 for the loss of 1 wicket, as the match ended in a tame draw. Services with the 2 points made their way into the semis, while Vidarbha ended at the 3rd position.

 

Vidarbha 184 (AS Naidu 86*, Y Singh 4/42 Sharma 4/47) & 50/1 (Fazal 26*) drew with Services 368 (MP Reddy 70, Gandhe 4/101)

 

 

Rajashtan Vs Haryana at Udaipur

 

After defeating Vidarbha last week, Haryana wanted to end their last league match on a winning note as they took on Rajasthan at Udaipur. Rajasthan after winning the toss and electing to bat, were bowled out for 301 with a top score of 74 from Gagan Khoda. Haryana in reply were propelled to 412, thanks to centuries from Sunny Singh and B Bist. Rajasthan in their 2nd Innings just managed 202, thanks to a 5-wicket haul from Amit Mishra leaving Haryana just 92 runs for victory. Haryana achieved the required target with the loss of just one wicket, as they ended up at the 1st position in Group B. Rajasthan ended at the 4th position with an aggregate of 7 points.

 

Rajasthan 301 (Khoda 74, Malik 3/31) and 202 (Mishra 5/73) lost to Haryana 412 (B Bist 113 S Singh 106) & 92/1 (C Sharma 47) by 9 wickets
