Ranji Trophy 2004/05: Plate Group - 4th Round Summary

The Fourth Round of matches in the Plate League got underway on the 13th of December. Here is a review of the matches that took place on the 13th of December to the 16th of December at various venues across the country.

 

 

Orissa Vs Jharkhand at Jamshedpur

 

After losing 2 points to Kerala last week, Jharkhand played hosts to Orissa at Jamshedpur. After winning the toss and electing to field, the Jharkhand bowlers did not let their captain down as they skittled out Orissa for a paltry total of 110. In reply Jharkhand were led with a scintillating century from the ever so flamboyant MS Dhoni. He scored 128 runs at a strike rate of 100 which included 18 hits to the fence and one over the fence. Jharkhand were restricted to 268, thanks to Mohanty who ended with figures of 4/63. Orissa in their 2nd Innings bettered their 1st Innings total by quite a big margin with notable contributions coming of the bats of Shiv Sunder Das and Pravanjan Mullick. They managed to put 294 on the board leaving Jharkhand a target of 137 runs. Jharkhand managed to reach the target with ease, thanks to an unbeaten 61 from Rajiv Kumar. This convincing win gave Jharkhand 4 points, putting them at the 2nd spot in the points table.

 

Jharkhand play Himachal Pradesh next week; what promises to be a cracker of a match at Jharkhand, where as Orissa play Saurashtra at Rajkot.

 

Orissa 110 (Rao 6/28) & 294 (SS Das 77 P Mullick 60) lost to Jharkhand 268 (MS Dhoni 128) & 137/4 (R Kumar 61*) by 6 wickets

 

 

Himachal Pradesh Vs Jammu & Kashmir at Dharmasala

 

After earning 5 points against Saurashtra last week, Himachal Pradesh were looking forward for another win against tourists Jammu & Kashmir at Dharmasala. After winning the toss and putting Jammu & Kashmir into bat, Himachal Pradesh did a splendid job to bowl out J & K for just 93 runs. Vishal Bhatia was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/7. Sangram Singh and Maninder Bisla in reply made merry as they both scored centuries and Himachal Pradesh posted a huge total of 370. With a hefty lead of 277 runs ahead of them, Jammu & Kashmir never looked settled, as they were again all out for just 158 runs in their 2nd Innings, giving Himachal Pradesh another win to sustain themselves on the top of the points table.

 

Himachal Pradesh play Jharkhand next week, where as Jammu & Kashmir play hosts to Kerala next week.

 

Jammu & Kashmir 83 (V Bhatia 4/7) & 158 (M Dar 43*, V Bhatia 4/40) lost to Himachal Pradesh 370 (MS Bisla 113 S Singh 101) by an Innings and 119 runs

 

 

Saurashtra Vs Kerala at Palakkad

 

After earning their first 2 points against Jharkhand last week, Kerala were looking forward to score more points by inflicting a defeat over Saurashtra this week at Palakkad. Saurashtra won the toss and put Kerala into bat. S Maniar put Kerala on the backfoot with 6 wickets for 55 runs as Kerala were bowled out for 117. In reply Saurashtra managed to put 260 on the board, with a top score of 45 from wicket-keeper Jogiyani's bat. Kerala's dismal performance with the bat continued as they were bowled out after putting just 114 runs on the board in their 2nd Innings. Maniar again was the most successful bowler with 4 wickets, making it 10 for the match. Saurashtra thus won the match convincingly and earned 5 crucial points.

 

Saurashtra play Orissa next week at Rajkot, where as Kerala go to Jammu to face Jammu & Kashmir

 

Kerala 117 (S Maniar 6/55) & 114 (S Maniar 4/33) lost to Saurasthra 260 (Jogiyani 45, S Kumar 3/27) by an Innings and 29 runs

 

 

Vidarbha Vs Haryana at Nagpur

 

After losing 4 points to Goa last week, Vidarbha played hosts against Haryana at Nagpur. Having won the toss and elected to bowl, the Vidarbha bowlers took full advantage of the early conditions as they bowled out Haryana for just 154. Preetam Gandhe was impressive with figures of 3/18. Vidarbha in reply played their worst cricket as they fell prey to Joginder Sharma who bagged 8 wickets for 24 runs and were bundled out for 57. Haryana in their 2nd Innings put up a decent total of 230, which meant Vidarbha required 328 to win the match. The Vidarbha team got to a good start thanks to Faiz Fazal who scored 81, but they couldn't convert it to a victory as they fell short by 41 runs. Joginder Sharma was again the leading wicket taker for the Haryanvis, with figures of 6/92. Haryana with this win earn 4 points.

Vidarbha play Services next week at Delhi, where as Haryana play Rajasthan.

 

Haryana 154 (P Gandhe 3/18) & 230 (B Bist 38) defeat Vidarbha 57 (J Sharma 8/24) & 286 (J Sharma 6/92) by 41 runs

 

 

Services Vs Tripura at Agartala

 

After losing to Rajasthan last week, Tripura were eager for a win against Services when they met them in Agartala. Tripura after winning the toss and batting first put 237 on the board, with a century from R Prasanna. Arun Sharma was impressive with figures of 6/72. Services in reply were bolstered to 422 thanks to centuries from Jasvir and Yashpal Singh. Tripura in their 2nd innings managed just 196 runs, with Arun Sharma again breaking through them with a 5-wicket haul. Services required just 12 runs for a victory which they did with utmost ease and earned 5 crucial points.

 

Tripura play Goa at Tripura next week, where as Services play Vidarbha in Delhi.

 

Tripura 237 (R Prasanna 100 A Sharma 6/72) & 196 (RC Shanbal 79) lost to Services 422 (J Singh 115 Y Singh 110) & 14/0 by 10 wickets.

 

 

Rajashtan Vs Goa at Jaipur

 

After opening their account against Vidarbha last week with an emphatic win, Goa now were confident to face Rajasthan at Jaipur. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Goa put up a dismal performance by scoring only 189 runs with captain Asnodkar scoring 59. S Mathur was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 6/40. Rajasthan in reply got ahead of Goa with 227 runs on the board. Aware and Yadav took 5 and 4 wickets respectively for Goa. Goa in their 2nd Innings put up a good performance with 348 runs on the board with 91 runs from the bat of Dani. Rajasthan in the quest of chasing 320 runs for a victory, were led by a brilliant century from VA Saxena, but their innings ended at 214/5 thus getting 2 points on account of the 1st Innings lead.

 

Rajasthan play Haryana next week at Rajasthan, where as Tripura play hosts to Goa.

 

Goa 198 (Asnodkar 59, Mathur 6/40) and 348 (SP Dani 91) drew with Rajasthan 227 (Doru 54, Aware 5/57 Yadav 4/57) & 214/5 (VA Saxena 105)
