Ranji Trophy 2004/05: Plate Group - 3rd Round Summary

The third round of matches in the Plate League got underway on the 4th of December. Here is a review of the matches that took place on the 4th of December to the 7th of December at various venues across the country.

 

 

Kerala Vs Jharkhand at Jamshedpur

 

After losing 2 points against Orissa last week, Kerala who were in much need of points to open their account went to Jamshedpur to face Jharkhand. Having won the toss and electing to bat, Kerala put on a decent total of 321 on the board in the 1st Innings with runs coming of the bats of Sreekumar Nair and Sebastien Anthony. In reply, Jharkhand were given a rollicking start by opener Manish Vardhan and keeper MS Dhoni who scored 94 and 97 respectively. Kerala eventually managed to bundle Jharkhand for 315. In the 2nd Innnings, Kerala were shot out for just 161 with medium pacer Mihir Diwakar taking 6 wickets. Jharkhand who required 168 runs for victory were able to play just 8 overs in which they scored 16 runs and hence lost 2 points to Kerala. 

 

Jharkhand play Orissa next week at Jharkhand, where as Kerala play Jammu & Kashmir at Jammu.

 

Kerala 321 (SR Nair 71 S Anthony 68) & 161 (SR Nair 57, Diwakar 6/48) drew with Jharkhand 315 (MS Dhoni 97 M Vardhan 94) & 16/0 (Yohannan 2/6)

 

 

Himachal Pradesh Vs Orissa at Dharmasala

 

After defeating Saurashtra last week, Himachal Pradesh played hosts to face Orissa at Dharmasala. Himachal Pradesh won the toss and elected to bat first. A century from Sangram Singh and some solid middle order assistance from Ajay Mannu and Virender Kumar Sharma took Himachal Pradesh to 425. Mohanty was the most successful bowler for Orissa as he ended up with figures of 4/86. In reply Orissa managed only 80 runs as Vikramjeet Malik and Ajay Thakur picked up 4 wickets each. Following on, Orissa in their 2nd Innings fared well than their 1st Innings but their effort wasn't good enough as they were bowled out for 302 with a 130 from Pinninti Jayachandra.

 

Himachal Pradesh play Jammu & Kashmir next week, where as Orissa face Jharkhand at Jharkhand.

 

Himachal Pradesh 425 (S Singh 100, Mohanty 4/86) defeated Orissa 80 (Malik 4/29 Thakur 4/32) & 302 (Thakur 4/67 Bhatia 4/102) by Innings and 43 runs

 

 

Vidarbha Vs Goa at Margoa

 

After losing against Haryana last week, Goa faced Vidarbha at Margoa in a quest of opening their account. After winning the toss, Vidarbha put Goa into bat. Shami Asnodkar led the way for Goa with a wonderful 101, as Goa ended up putting a fine total of 371 on the board. In reply Vidarbha managed to score 300, with a 114 from Harshal Shitoot. With a lead of 71 runs in their kit, Goa scored 211 in their 2nd Innings as Shami Asnodkar came amongst the runs again with a fine 90. Chasing 283 for a victory, Vidarbha were bowled out for just 117 with Aware and Yadav bagging 3 wickets each. Goa with this emphatic win over Vidarbha earned 4 important points, thus opening their account in their points tally.

 

Vidarbha play Haryana next week at Nagpur, where as Goa play Rajashtan at Rajasthan.

 

Goa 371 (S Asnodkar 101, Singh 4/98) & 211 (S Asnodkar 90, Singh 4/59) defeat Vidarbha 300 (H Shitoot 114, Aware 4/95) & 117 (Yadav 3/9 Aware 3/42) by 165 runs

 

 

Rajasthan Vs Tripura at Jaipur

 

After losing to Vidarbha last week, Tripura made their way to Jaipur to face Rajasthan. This match was very important for Rajasthan since they hadn't opened their account yet. Rajasthan won the toss and put Tripura into bat. The Rajasthan bowlers took full advantage of the early conditions and bowled out Tripura for just 108. Mathur was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/28. In reply, Rajasthan managed to gain a lead of 230 runs with a top score of 70 from Hussain as they managed to score 338. Tripura's dismal performance continued as they were bowled out for a paltry 116 in their 2nd Innings which meant an Innings victory for the boys from Rajasthan. Mohammad Aslam and Rahul Kanwat were impressive with figures of 4/27 and 3/24 respectively as Rajasthan gained 5 crucial points from this victory.

 

Rajasthan play Goa at Rajasthan next week, where as Tripura play Services in Tripura.

 

Tripura 108 (Mathur 3/28) & 116 (Aslam 4/27 Kanwat 3/24) lost to Rajasthan 338 (Z Hussain 70, Jain 4/84) by an Innings & 114 runs

 

 

Services Vs Haryana at Delhi

 

After earning 2 points against Rajasthan last week, Services played host against Haryana at Delhi. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Haryana managed to put up 435 on the board with Shafiq Khan scoring a magnificent 197, unlucky enough to miss his double ton. In reply, Services were able to put just 185 on the board, as Joginder Sharma took 3 wickets. Following on in the 2nd Innings, Haryana were all out for 231 as Amit Mishra ripped through them with figures of 4/50. Haryana with this victory earned 5 important points.

 

Haryana play Vidarbha next week at Nagpur, where as Services play Tripura at Tripura

 

Haryana 435 (S Khan 197, Sharma 4/101) defeated Services 185 (J Sharma 3/46) & 231 (A Mishra 4/50)

 

 

Saurashtra Vs Jammu & Kashmir at Rajkot

 

Since both Saurashtra and Jammu & Kashmir hadn't opened their account, this match was going to be a very important match for both of them. Having won the toss and elected to bat, Jammu & Kashmir piled up the runs as they ended up scoring 505, which included a century from the bat of Arshad Bhatt and notable contributions from Kavaljit Singh and Manzoor Dar. Saurashtra had to go past Jammu & Kashmir in their 1st Innings to get at least 2 points. They did that exactly with a wonderful 160 from captain Jaydev Shah and 82 from Jobanputra. Saurashtra took a 1st Innings lead after posting a huge 596 on the board as the Test ended in a tame draw. Saurashtra earned 2 important points, where as Jammu & Kashmir are yet to cross their mark.
