Ranji Trophy 2004/05: Plate Group - 1st Round Summary |

The Domestic Season in India is very much alive
and back with a bang. After the Irani Trophy,
which is officially considered as a
curtain-raiser to the season to follow, its now
Ranji Trophy time. The two teams that will be in
action this season in the Plate group after
getting relegated from the Elite Group last year
will be Kerala and Rajasthan. The first round of matches
got underway on the 16th of November.
Here is a review of the matches that took place
on the 16th November to 19th November at various
venues across the country.

Himachal Pradesh at Palghat |
The Plate Group Matches of the Ranji Trophy
2004/05 season got underway as Kerala took on
Himachal Pradesh in Palghat, Kerala. Electing to
bat after winning the toss, the Himachal Pradesh
batsmen Sangram Singh and Maninder Bisla took
full advantage as they notched up a double
century and century respectively. Himachal
Pradesh ended at 465 in the 1st Innings with 206
from Sangram Singh and Maninder Bisla scoring
134. Sree Santh was impressive for Kerala taking
5/103. In reply Kerala managed to get only 215
with Koragappa Chandrasekhara top scoring with
63. With a lead of 250 runs in their hands
already, Himachal Pradesh scored 187/7 in their
2nd Innings with 48 runs coming of the bat of
Paras Dogra. Chasing 438 for an improbable
victory, Kerala managed to get to 290/6 with
their captain Sunil Oasis top scoring with an
unbeaten 82.
Himachal Pradesh earned 2 points on account of
their 1st Innings lead and they travel
Jamshedpur next week to play Jharkhand, whereas
Kerala would like to score their first points
next week against Orissa at Palghat.

Tripura Vs
Haryana at Agartala |
Tripura took on Haryana at Agartala in their
first match of Ranji Trophy 2004/05. Haryana
after winning the toss managed to put only 200
runs on the board in their 1st Innings with
notable contributions from Sunny Singh and Ajay
Ratra. Tripura in reply made 288 in their 1st
Innings with Ramaswamy Prasanna scoring 98.
Haryana piled up the runs in the 2nd Innings
with centuries from Chetan Sharma, Ishan Ganda
and Joginder Sharma. Haryana ended at 437/5, but
Tripura earned 2 points due to their 1st Innings
lead.
Haryana play Goa next week at Gurgaon, where as
Tripura go to Nagpur to play Vidarbha.

Vidarbha Vs
Rajasthan at Nagpur |
Rajasthan travelled Nagpur to take on Vidarbha
in their first match of the Ranji Trophy
2004/05. Vidarbha won the toss and put Rajasthan
in to bat. The Rajasthan team fell to the
bowling of Sandeep Singh and Chandrashekhar
Atram as they managed to get only 101 on the
board. Vidarbha in reply took a 56 run lead
after getting all out for 157, thanks to the
bowling of Krishnakumar and Mathur. Rajasthan in
their 2nd Innings were able to put only 151 runs
on the board with 87 coming from the bat of an
Indian reject - Gagan Khoda. Chasing 96 runs for
a victory, Vidarbha raced to their target with 7
wickets in hand and thus earned 4 points.
Vidarbha take on Tripura next week at Nagpur,
where as Rajasthan go to Delhi to take on
Services next week.

Jammu & Kashmir
Vs Orissa at Jammu |
Orissa took on Jammu & Kashmir in their first
encounter of the Ranji Trophy 2004/05 at Jammu.
Jammu & Kashmir after winning the toss, put
Orissa into bat. Orissa managed to get a decent
325 in their 1st Inning with a century from
Pravanjan Mullick. Jammu & Kashmir in reply
played poorly as they scored just 123 runs with
Deepak Mangaraj and Sanjay Satpathy taking 4/43
and 3/29 respectively. Following on, Jammu &
Kashmir scored 299 in their 2nd Inning with a
top score of 94 coming from Kavaljit Singh.
Orissa required just 98 runs for a victory and
they achieved that easily with 8 wickets in
hand.
Orissa go to Palghat next week to play Kerala,
where as Himachal Pradesh play Saurashtra next
week at Dharmasala.

Saurashtra took on Jharkhand at Rajkot in their
1st Match of the Ranji Trophy 2004/05.
Saurashtra after winning the toss, elected to
bat first and managed to put 274 on the board
with notable contributions from Shitanshu Kotak
and Rakesh Dhurv. Jharkhand in reply scored 358
with centuries of the bat of Manish Vardhan and
Ranjan Kumar Singh. Saurashtra in their 2nd
Innings finished at 279/6 with Shitanshu Kotak
again amongst the runs with 98.
Jharkand who earned 2 points on account of the
1st Inning lead play Jammu & Kashmir at
Jamshedpur next week where as Saurashtra play
Himachal Pradesh at Dharmasala.

Goa travelled to Delhi to face Services for
their 1st Match of this year's Ranji Trophy.
Services won the toss and elected to bat first.
Services put up a huge total of 507/5 declared,
after Jasvir Singh scored 109 and Yashpal Singh
made an unbeaten double century. Goa replied
back scoring just 244 runs in their 1st Inning
with an unbeaten century from Mandar Phadke. Goa
were asked to follow on and Mandar Phadke scored
another century in their 2nd Inning as Goa
closed at 269/4. Services on account of their
1st Inning lead earned 2 points.
Services play Rajasthan next week at Delhi where
as Goa play Haryana at Gurgaon.
