Jan 18th, 2005:
Orissa took on Bengal in the final match of the
East Zone League today at the Eden Gardens at
Kolkata. This match would decide which team
ended on top of the East Zone League.
After winning the toss
and electing to bat, Orissa were of to a decent
start reaching a total of 125 for the loss of 4
wickets by the 30th over. But a crucial 75 from
the bat of Niranjan Behera along with a blasting
81 of 60 from the bat of Pinninti Jayachandra
put Orissa in the driver's seat as they posted a
total of 267 on the board for the loss of 5
wickets. Ranjit Ranadeb Bose took 3 wickets for
Bengal but was proved a bit costly giving away
58 runs.
Bengal in reply were lead
by an inform captain in the form of Devang
Gandhi who scored a strokeful 65 of 62 balls
which included 11 boundaries. Bengal were 6 down
and required an unlikely 76 of the last 5 overs,
when bad light came into play and along with it
did the Duckworth-Lewis System. According to the
Duckworth-Lewis System, Bengal were found 39
runs short of the required total in that
situation. Thus Orissa with this victory earned
the no.1 position in the East Zone League with
17 points.
