Haryana Vs
Maharashtra at Pune (Result : Maharashtra won by 10
wickets)
|
|
Elite Group
hopefuls Maharashtra and Haryana battled for promotion
in the Ranji Trophy Plate Group semi-finals at Pune.
After Haryana skipper Jitender Singh won the toss and
chose to bat, his batsmen let them down. The only
defiance came from Shafiq Khan, who made 114. Despite
his knock, Haryana were bowled out for a meagre 236.
For Maharashtra, Ranjit Khirid and Kiran Adhav shared
3 wickets each. The Maharashtra reply was strong and
almost shunned Haryana out of contention. Dhiraj
Jadhav made 135, former India batsman and Maharashtra
skipper notched up 180 and rookie wicketkeeper
Satyajit Satbhai scored 119, his maiden ton in
Domestic Cricket. All these massive individual
performances led to a mammoth team total of 592 and were
instrumental in putting Maharashtra in a position
from where they could only win ! Haryana in their
second innings, played well by putting 364 runs
on the board. Shafiq Khan added a half-century to
his name and scored 66. But the real star for Haryana
in the 2nd Innings was Sunny Singh, who scored 87. For
Maharashtra, Kashinath Khadkikar bagged a
haul of 4/85 and Kiran Adhav picking a fiver for 124
runs. Haryana took a slender lead of 9 runs and the
Maharashtra batsmen wasted no time in chasing the
target to bag the match by 10 wickets. This match, not
only takes them through to the finals of the
Plate Group, but guarantees their promotion
to the "big league" of Indian Domestic Cricket
- The Elite Group of the Ranji Trophy.

Madhya Pradesh Vs
Orissa at Cuttack (Result : Madhya Pradesh won by 5
wickets)
|
Orissa
took on Madhya Pradesh to win the promotion
berth for next year's Elite Group in the semis
of the Plate Group at Cuttack. They won the
toss and chose to bat first. But, the batsmen
unfortunately did not respond well to the
skipper's call and slumped to 108 for 4. All
rounder Pravanjan Mullick then steadied the ship
with his superb 142, and guided Orissa to 318. For
Madhya Pradesh, Yogesh Golwalkar grabbed 6 wickets
ably supported by Harvinder Singh Sodhi. Madhya
Pradesh, also surprisingly got out to
not-so-auspicious start, but, good half centuries
by Ojha and Nikhil Patwardhan helped them reach
258. For the hosts, offie Sanjay Satpathy and
pacer Mangaraj took 4 and 3 wickets respectively.
Having acquired a lead of 170, all looked rosy for
Orissa, until they were bowled out for 253, with
only notable contribution coming from captain
Sanjay Raul, who scored 88 runs. Golwalkar picked
4 wickets for the innings and 10 for the game,
brilliantly supported by former India leggie,
Narendra Hirwani. Chasing a target of 315 for the
win, Madhya Pradesh were checked by Orissa in
regular intervals by regular wicket-taking, but in
the end, Ojha with his steady 54 and Syed
Abbas Ali who scored 90 rounded up Orissa's hopes
and took Madhya Pradesh past the target set for
them. Madhya Pradesh now play Maharashtra for top
2nd division honours, and have booked a place in
the elite group for themselves.
