Mumbai Vs Railways at Wankhede Stadium (Result: Match Drawn)

A very crucial match for Railways against Mumbai went underway on the 17th December at the Wankhede. Mumbai, who have already qualified for the semis were set to derail Railway's chances into the last four. The hosts won the toss and elected to bat. The usual top order blemish saw them in trouble at 141 for four. Amol Mazumdar played a rock solid knock of 95. But the man who did the damage was the hard hitting all-rounder, Ramesh Powar who took toll of some poor bowling by Railways and notched up his highest first class score of 131 with Mumbai ending at 388. For Railways, JP Yadav and Harvinder Singh were the pick of the bowlers. Railways didn't start well either and the Mumbai boys triggered a collapse, and ended the Railways reply at 198, with Powar coming his own with 4/69. Railways conceded a first innings lead of 190. Mumbai, in their second innings, played poorly thanks to some good bowling by Mumbai exile Shreyas Khanolkar and JP Yadav. They folded up for 168, setting a next-to-impossible target for Railways of 359. Railways ended the game with a second innings total of 121 for 4, with a good unbeaten 58 by veteran Raja Ali. Mumbai take 2 points from the game, whereas Railways have to play a game of hopes to make sure their place in the Semis. Mumbai play Punjab next at Mohali, while Railways take on a struggling Baroda at Baroda.

Mumbai 388 (Amol Mazumdar 95, Ramesh Powar 131; Harvinder Singh 3/79, JP Yadav 3/67) and 168 all out (Kambli 64; JP Yadav 4/41, Khanolkar 3/19) drew with Railways 198 (Bangar 49; Powar 4/69, Maulvi 2/28) and 121 for 4 (Bahutule 2/42)
 

Tamil Nadu Vs Hyderabad at Hyderabad (Result : Match Drawn)

It was time for teams with contrasting results to lock horns in a crucial tie for the hosts. Tamil Nadu had already qualified for the Semis and hence, the game meant of academic interest for them. After Venkatapathy Raju won the toss, he elected to bat. Hyderabad were all set for a huge score thanks to some poor bowling by the visitors. Vinay Kumar piled on 95 and Ibrahim Khaleel, showed his rescuing talent once again with a fluent 75. The Hyderabadi tail, wagged well with Vishnuvardhan, Raju and NP Singh adding 133 runs ending the innings at 447. For Tamil Nadu, Gokulakrishnan and Kumaran picked up 3 wickets each. The TN lineup wasn't tested till date, as they eased to comfortable vicotories in their previous matches. But, they offered little resistance to the Hyderabadi bowlers and were skittled out for 240 with Sriram, being the standout batsman making 58, ably supported by upcoming talent Sunil Viswanathan. Vishnuvardhan picked up 5 wickets for Hyderabad. TN, following for the first time, battled on in their second innings and scored 237 for 4 in their second innings. Viswanathan, followed his 50 in the first innings with a match-saving 70 off 202 balls with his U-22 teammate S Badrinath. Hyderabad, who carry 2 points from this home game, are in a must-win position to book a spot in the Semis. Tamil Nadu, get a rest week, while Hyderabad play Rajasthan at Hyderabad.

Hyderabad 447 (Khaleel 75, Vinay Kumar 95, Vishnuvardhan 59; Gokulakrishnan 3/77) drew with Tamil Nadu 240 (Sriram 58, Viswanathan 50; Vishnuvardhan 5/77) and 237/4 (Viswanathan 70*, Badrinath 56; Vishnuvardhan 2/58)
 

Andhra Vs Punjab at Mohali (Result : Punjab won by an innngs and 95 runs)

A game, where there is nothing much to write about. Andhra, winning the toss and batting first, scored the lowest score in Ranji History since 1977, 30. For Punjab Gagandeep and Sharma took 5 wickets each. Punjab scored 209 in their first chance with useful knocks from Mongia and Yuvraj. In the second innings, Andhra folded up for 95, with Gagandeep taking 5 again and Sharma 4. Punjab, raced to their first outright win in 1 day and a half. Punjab take 4 pts to boost their Semifinal chances and Andhra return home with their faces down.
Andhra now face Delhi at Vizag while Punjab face champions Mumbai at Mohali.

Andhra 30 (Gagandeep 5/11, Sharma 5/3) and 95 (Gagandeep 5/32, Sharma 4/32) lost to Punjab 209 (Yuvraj 38, Sahabuddin 5/52) by an innings and 95 runs.


Baroda Vs Uttar Pradesh at Baroda (Result : UP won by an innings and 7 runs)

Baroda, having a poor run in the season so far, had to play well to reach the Semis. But, UP was to be a thorn in their flesh. Having elected to bat first, UP piled on a mammoth 473, with a superb 168 from veteran middle order bat Rizwan Shamshad and a fluent 66 from India U-19 player Suresh Raina. Baroda played some meek cricket and got bowled out cheaply for 249 in their first innings, with some resistance from former India stumper Nayan Mongia, who scored 85. Following on, UP got things tighter towards themselves as Baroda collapsed for 217, despite a valiant unbeaten 88 from Nayan Mongia. For UP, Nikhil Chopra picked up 4 wickets. UP have to win their next game for a Semi-final contention, while for Baroda, relegation beckons.

Uttar Pradesh play Kerala next at Kanpur, while Baroda take on Railways at home.

Delhi Vs Kerala at Delhi (Result : Match Drawn)

Kerala, after losing at Mumbai, traveled to Delhi to try and improve its chances of staying in the Elite Group. A game marred by delays, which helped Kerala's cause to an extent, after they were put in by Delhi to bat. Kerala managed to save on the initial blows by their middle order coming good. They piled on 371 runs with Ajay Kudva scoring 123 and skipper Sunil Oasis making 63. For Delhi, Sarandeep and Rahul Sanghvi shared 4 wickets each. Delhi in reply just about managed to overhaul the Kerala score to take the first innings lead with scores of 104 from Rajat Bhatia and 78 from Gautam Gambhir. Ex-India bat Ajay Jadeja also chipped in with 60. Delhi ended up with 375 for 6, enough to ensure them 2 points from this game.

Kerala now play UP at Kanpur, while Delhi play Andhra at Vizag.

Gujarat Vs Karnataka at Ahmedabad (Result : Karnataka won by 10 wickets)

Gujarat, taking on a not-so-confident Karnataka at Ahmedabad was a game where the winner could almost book a place in the semis. Gujarat, faltered badly and scored just 210, with former India paceman Dodda Ganesh picking 5 scalps. For the home side, Bhavik Thakker scored a 50. Karnataka replied with some superb knocks by opener Barrington Rowland, who scored 150 off 270 balls and skipper Arunkumar scoring 43. Sidharth Trivedi, the India A paceman picked 4 scalps. Gujarat in their second innings, collapsed for 172 , with Sunil Joshi picking up 6 wickets and Udit Patel getting 4 scalps. Karnataka were set 30 runs for a victory, which they achieved without much blemish. Karnataka take 5 points to make their semifinal chances better, while Gujarat have to battle hard.

Gujarat play Bengal at Ahmedabad while Karnataka to take on Assam at the Chinnaswamy Stadium at Bangalore.

Gujarat 210 all out (Thaker 50; Dodda Ganesh 5/61) and 172 (Sunil Joshi 6/59,Udit Patel 4/53) lost to Karnataka 353 all out (Rowland 150; Trivedi 4/89) and 30/0 by 10 wickets
