Piyush Chawla - Little Man on Big Stage |
A Feature by Rakesh Kumar Srivastava (March
21, 2006)
Piyush Chawla became the second youngest player
to play for India in Test Matches. He made his
Test Debut at Mohali against England at the age
of 17 years and 75 days while Sachin Tendulkar
was the youngest to play for India at the age of
16 years and 264 days.
With senior spin bowlers in the side Anil Kumble
and Harbhajan Singh playing a pivotal role in
India's victory and also backed by a great feat
and a dream debut by Munaf Patel, Piyush Chawla
hardly had an opportunity to bowl yet he grabbed
his maiden test wicket that of the English
Skipper Andrew Flintoff, a wicket he will
cherish for a long. However the young leg
spinner shall feel proud of being a part of the
victorious Indian team and definitely a star for
the future in the Indian team as the team
management having pinned lots of faith on him.
Piyush Chawla with his performances in the
recently concluded Under 19 World Cup had
convinced everybody that it is just the
beginning of greater things ahead. He went into
the competition with a big reputation and was
consistent throughout the tournament. He has a
smooth run up and impeccable control and on
turning wickets he can cause plenty of problems
for the batsmen. He also bowls a well disguised
googly which can fox the best of the batsmen.
He has played seven first class games for Uttar
Pradesh and has taken 43 wickets at an average
of 23.57. He also has four five-wicket hauls and
he dismissed Sachin Tendulkar with a googly in
the Challenger Trophy.
Chawla can also go onto become a decent
all-rounder as he made three 50s in first class
cricket. During the Under 19 World Cup, Piyush
Chawla took 13 wickets from 6 matches at an
impressive average of 12.15 which included the
stunning 4 for 8 in the finals. Incidentally he
became the first man coming out of the recently
concluded Under 19 World Cup to be picked up to
play in Test Cricket for his country.
