Younis Khan resigns as Pak Captain; Yousuf to lead in Champions trophy

October 5, 2006

Younis KhanStylish middle order batsman Younis Khan has refused to skipper Pakistan in the Champions Trophy just two days before the team's departure to India. Younis in a press conference at Lahore shocked the cricketing world stating that he did not want to be a dummy captain and the reason why he has refused the captaincy would be revealed afterward.

Younis Khan before leaving abruptly from the press conference ended up saying that "I am leaving the captaincy. Whether I am made captain for four or six matches I am not willing to be captain and no one should ask me any questions." The Captaincy was confirmed on Younis Khan after the decision of banning Inzamam for four ODIs had come from the ICC. Inzamam was retained as the Captain for the upcoming home series against West Indies and he was replaced with middle order bat Faisal Iqbal for the ICC Champions Trophy.

Experienced middle order batsman Mohammad Yousuf has now been given the responsibility of leading Pakistan in the Champions Trophy. Younis Khan had later expressed his regret to PCB for his statements. He has been retained in the side and will play as a batsman. The Pakistan Cricket Board has given a media release later in the day which is as follows:

Pakistan Cricket Board deeply regrets that Mr. Younis Khan chose to announce his withdrawal from the captaincy of the Pakistan Team for the Champions Trophy. He did so without prior consultation with the Board.

2. PCB has noted that Mr. Younis Khan's ill-timed decision to renounce the captaincy was a breach of discipline. However, Mr. Younis Khan has since expressed his regret to the Chairman for the unsavory incident. Mr. Younis Khan has reconfirmed to the Chairman that he does not wish to be considered for the captaincy of the team for the Champions Trophy and has conveyed to the Chairman that he is prepared to continue playing as a team member. PCB has taken cognizance of the incident and the matter will be dealt with in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Board. Younis Khan will step down from the captaincy of his own accord but will continue to play in the team.

3. In consultation with the Adhoc Committee members Mr. Mohammad Yousuf has been nominated as Captain of the Pakistan Team and Mr. Abdul Razzaq will be the Vice Captain.
