May 2nd
2005, Islamabad:
Lanky fast
bowler Shabbir Ahmed and middle-order batsman
Bazid Khan returned to Pakistan's cricket team
Monday for this month's series in the Caribbean
islands against the West Indies.
Ahmed, 29, has recovered from his knee operation
and will be back in action after remaining on
the sidelines for a year. The right-arm medium
fast bowler last played a Test match against
India at home in March 2004.
Bazid Khan - the 25-year old son of Pakistan
former Test opener and captain Majid Khan, has
played two one-day internationals in which he
disappointed against minnows Zimbabwe at home
last year by scoring just 12 runs. However, Khan
scored heavily in the domestic season and made
his way back into the national squad.
Frontline paceman Shoaib Akhtar (groin problem)
and Mohammad Sami (heel injury) failed to
recover from their injuries and were not
considered for two Test matches and three
one-day internationals against the West Indies.
Akhtar, who sustained a groin injury during
Pakistan's tour of Australia earlier this year,
also skipped the three Tests and six one-day
internationals against rival India last month.
In the absence of Akhtar and Sami, the new ball
would be shared between Ahmed, Rana
Naved-ul-Hasan, Abdul Razzaq, Shahid Nazir and
Rao Iftikhar while leg-spinner Danish Kaneria
and off-spinner Arshad Khan are two specialist
slow bowlers.
On Monday, the Pakistan Cricket Board banned
all-rounder Shoaib Malik for one Test match and
also fined 75 per cent of his two one-day
internationals match fee for intentionally
throwing away a Twenty20 Cup domestic cricket
match last week.
