Shahid Nazir puts Pak in a winning position against Northants

July 22, 2006

Speedster Shahid Nazir had taken three wickets and had bounced out Former Indian Skipper Sourav Ganguly with a wicked bouncer to set up what could be a comfortable victory for the tourists. Pakistan at stumps on Day 2 are 24 for no loss in their 2nd innings and they are chasing a moderate target of 160. Resuming at an overnight total of 97 for 3, Pakistan added up 153 more runs before declaring its innings at 250 for 9. Younis Khan, the skipper for this game could add just 8 runs to his overnight score of 50 not out. Kamran Akmal, Jannisar Khan and Rao Iftikhar Anjum contributed with useful 30s. There was a fifer for the 24-year-old David Wigley and Sourav Ganguly bowled six overs of his medium pace to take the wicket of Kamran Akmal.

Northants’ second innings was rocked by Shahid Nazir and Rao Iftikhar Anjum who accounted for the failure of the top five batsmen. Centurion in the first innings, Stephen Peters was removed by Iftikhar for a duck and Sourav Ganguly was hit on his face by a nasty bouncer from Nazir that forced him to retire hurt after making 5 runs having faced 18 deliveries. Eventually, Northants folded up for just 140 in a little over 38 overs with the runs coming from only Phillips (39*) and Pietersen (20 not out). Shahid Nazir took 3 wickets in his 7 overs and Rao Iftikhar Anjum picked up a couple in his 5 overs. Arshad Khan and Imran Farhat took a couple of wickets each in the end. Chasing 160, Pakistan hasn’t lost the openers Imran Farhat and Salman Butt and the pair had negotiated 7 overs successfully. Pakistan should go onto score the remaining 136 runs unless they bat miserably.
