28th Feb, NEW DELHI:
Pakistan's cricket team landed in India for
their first full series in the country in six
year, the latest sign of warming ties between
South Asia's nuclear rivals.
The Pakistan team, captained by Inzamam-ul
Haq, touched down at New Delhi's international
airport to a warm welcome. Cricket has remained
a vital indicator of the state of relations
between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, who
stood on the brink of a third war over the
disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir in
mid-2002. The Indian government banned all
bilateral cricket with Pakistan in April, 2000,
due to political tensions.
However, it lifted the ban in late 2003 after
a thaw in relations and the Indian team made a
highly successful tour of Pakistan in
March-April last year, their first full series
across the border in more than 14 years.
The teams are scheduled to play three tests
and six one-day internationals during their
50-day trip.
