name an unchanged squad for the Australian tour |
1st Nov, WELLINGTON:
New Zealand’s cricket squad will lack top-class
fast bowlers when they face world champions
Australia this month.
Cricket selectors announced Monday that the New
Zealand lineup will remain unchanged from their
successful Bangladesh tour late last month. Fast
bowlers Shane Bond and Daryl Tuffey remain
injured, leaving the New Zealanders short-handed
in the first half of their home-and-away series
against Australia. The two Test matches in
Australia – beginning Nov. 18 in Brisbane and
Nov. 26 in Adelaide – will be followed by a
series in New Zealand in February and March.
The New Zealand selectors, under Sir Richard
Hadlee, have retained James Franklin, Ian
Butler, Chris Martin, Kyle Mills and Jacob Oram
as their fast bowling contingent in Australia.
They have also named two spin bowlers, retaining
off spinner Paul Wiseman, who took eight wickets
at 35 in Bangladesh, and Daniel Vettori who took
20 wickets in two Test matches.
Mathew Sinclair has been named as an opening
batsman in the absence of Michael Papps, who is
injured, and Hamish Marshall was chosen ahead of
experienced Craig McMillan. “With Michael Papps
injured, we have confidence in Mathew Sinclair
and it makes sense for him to open the innings,”
said Hadlee. “It is good for Sinclair to have
the opportunity to continue on from where he
left off in the Tests against Bangladesh.”
Team: Stephen Fleming (captain), Mark
Richardson, Mathew Sinclair, Scott Styris,
Nathan Astle, Hamish Marshall, Brendan McCullum,
Jacob Oram, Daniel Vettori, James Franklin, Kyle
Mills, Paul Wiseman, Ian Butler, Chris Martin.
