McMillan, Tuffey
in NZ World Cup Squad! |
February 13, 2007
New
Zealand became the third country to name its
World Cup Squad after India and Sri Lanka. The
New Zealand Selectors have recalled forgotten
fast bowler Daryl Tuffey who returns to
international cricket after a gap of two years.
Also in the side is Craig McMillan who made his
comeback at the international level only this
season.
Daryl Tuffey's inclusion is
believed to be because of the knee injury to
Kyle Mills, the new ball bowler. Mills has been
ruled out of the World Cup due to his knee
surgery. The New Zealand Coach, John Bracewell
was looking for some one who moves the ball away
from the right hander just like how Mills does
and the only man who could do that well is Daryl
Tuffey of Northern Districts. The 28-year-old
had played 76 ODIs and had taken 90 wickets with
an economy rate of 4.65 before missing several
matches due to a shoulder injury.
There has been no place for
Chris Harris, who has started to score heavily
at the first class level and some one who was
close to selection. Also not included are all
rounder Andre Adams and medium pacer Chris
Martin. There is also no place for the Marshall
Twins as well! Out of the 15 men selected for
the World Cup, 13 of them will be playing in the
3-ODI Chappell-Hadlee Series against Australia
that begins at Wellington on the 16th of this
month. Peter Fulton and Michael Mason are the
two players left out from the 13-man squad.
New Zealand is placed in Group C
along with England, Kenya and Canada with their
first game scheduled on the 16th of March
against England at St.Lucia.
