Kiwis blown away
inside three days by Steyn |
Link to Scorecard
As many as seventeen
wickets fell on the third day's play which was
also the last day of the test series. New
Zealand were whitewashed 0-2 with an innings and
59-run defeat in the second test at the
Centurion. Dale Steyn was the Man of the Match
and also the Man of the Series. He picked up a
stunning six-wicket haul bowling just 10.3 overs
today to bowl out New Zealand in just 34.3 overs.
Earlier in the day, Mark
Gillespie ensured that the Test Match wasn't
going to prolong as he took a five-wicket haul
on debut to restrict SA to 383. Hashim Amla
could just get past his hundred before he was
dismissed. Amla made 103 in 216 balls with 15
fours. The rest of the South African batting
didn't come to the party with the New Zealanders
finding quick success. There was an irritating
partnership towards the end from Andre Nel and
Dale Steyn with both the fast bowlers scoring 25
each to give SA a lead of 195 runs. The SA
innings lasted just 97.3 overs clearly
indicating the difficulty of the pitch and
weather conditions for the batsmen.
In their second innings,
New Zealand lost its openers to Dale Steyn but
then fought back through a partnership between
Fleming and Styris which was broken by Kallis.
Styris was the man falling for 21. Steyn then
ran through the batting order with his six
wickets. It was again Stephen Fleming putting up
some sort of a fight, but again it was just a
half century. He made 54 from 85 with 9 fours
and a six before being Steyn's third victim.
Fleming could get a bit of support from Brendon
McCullum (21) who was only third Kiwi to get
into double figures in the second innings. New
Zealand got demolished for 136 in their second
innings giving an innings victory for the home
side. Ntini and Kallis could take a wicket each.
Craig Cumming, who was injured on the first day
couldn't take any part in the match leaving New
Zealand with just nine wickets in both the
innings.
