Profile of Nuwan Zoysa
- B.V.Swagath
Nuwan Zoysa may be in and out of the Lankan line up because of his
consistent injuries, but whenever Zoysa has been playing, he has always
done justice to his inclusion in the side with decent performances. The
recent Asia Cup was just the example of Nuwan Zoysa’s utility to the
team. Zoysa was the most successful bowler for the Lankans as the tall
left armer made the correct adjustments in line and length and also
variations according to the Sri Lankan wickets.
Nuwan Zoysa came into reckoning with a sensational hat trick against
Zimbabwe in the second test at Harare in 199/00. Interesting part about
that hat-tick was that all the three wickets fell in the first three
balls of the second over of the match. There was an electricity
breakdown in Harare at the same time and by the time electricity was
restored, Zimbabwe were 0/3 with Zoysa recording a hat trick.
Unfortunately we don’t have the privilege of watching the hat trick
because of that electricity breakdown.
Zoysa isn’t gifted with pace but has the ability to cause discomforting
bounce to the best of the best batsmen. He has become a better bowler
these days with the ability to swing and seam the ball both ways, vary
the bowling speeds and bowling the Yorkers. Nuwan Zoysa is also a useful
lower order batsman who can use the long handle with good effect.
