Yuvraj
and Powar included in the Test Squad |
Monday, March 22,
2004 (New Delhi):
Leg-spinner Anil
Kumble and medium pacer Ajit Agarkar have been
included in the 15-member Indian team for the
upcoming three-Test series against Pakistan.
Opener Akash Chopra was also picked for the
series while injured bowler Harbhajan Singh
was ruled out as he is yet to recover fully,
BCCI Secretary S K Nair said here.
Ashish Nehra, who played a winning hand in the
Karachi one-dayer, was not considered for
selection owing to injury. Rookie all-rounder
Ramesh Powar and one-day specialist Yuvraj
Singh were also named in the squad for the
historic series.
However, the board has overlooked Mohammad
Kaif, Hemang Badani and Amit Bhandari and the
three will return home after the one-day
series. The BCCI Secretary justified inclusion
of just one wicketkeeper in the squad saying
in case of injury to Parthiv Patel, a reserve
keeper could always be flown in. The squad was
finalized after the selectors had a tele-conference
with the captain and coach John Wright.
The Indian team members are: Sourav Ganguly (capt),
Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman,
Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Akash Chopra,
Zaheer Khan, Irfan Pathan, L Balaji, Ajit
Agarkar, Anil Kumble, Parthiv Patel, Ramesh
Powar, Murali Kartik.
India will play three test matches in Pakistan
- First Test at Multan (March 28 to April 1),
Second Test at Lahore (April 5-9) and the
Third Test at Rawalpindi (April 13-17).
