Raina, Venu and
JP get a nod for the Lanka Tri Series; Dravid to
lead |
The
Indian Selectors have gone in for two new faces
in a 16-men squad to take part in the Tri Series
to be played in Sri Lanka from July 30. The two
new faces are Y.Venugopala Rao, Suresh Raina.
Railways all rounder, J.P.Yadav may also be
called as a new face as he has played just the 2
ODIs and has earned a recall after 3 years with
his last international being against West Indies
at Rajkot. All the three youngsters have
been rewarded for their excellent performances
in last year's Ranji Trophy. Sourav Ganguly has
been named as the 16th player and he could take
part in the tournament if the decision on his
4-match ban comes in his favour. If Sourav
cannot play in this tournament then India would
have to miss the services of two of its
superstars in Sourav himself and Sachin
Tendulkar, who has been out of contention with a
Tennis Elbow. Rahul Dravid has been named
as the captain with Virender Sehwag being his
deputy. Y.Venugopala Rao has been a prolific
scorer for Andhra and South Zone over the last
few years. One of his major achievements has
been the amazing unbeaten double century against
England A in the 2003-04 Duleep Trophy when
South Zone successfully chased a target of above
500. Suresh Raina is a left handed middle order
batsman from Uttar Pradesh and he also has the
ability to bow useful off breaks just like
Venugopala Rao. Raina is an attacking batsman
who can pack a punch in his shots. The Indian
Squad would be leaving to Sri Lanka on the 22nd
of this month from Chennai and would be playing
a couple of warm up games before getting into
the tournament which also involves Sri Lanka and
West Indies. Also back in the One Day side are
seniors Anil Kumble and VVS Laxman. This would
also be the 1st Series for the new coach Greg
Chappell.
Following is the squad :
Rahul Dravid (Captain), Virender Sehwag (Vice
Captain), VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra
Singh Dhoni (Wicket Keeper), Md.Kaif,
Y.Venugopala Rao, Suresh Raina, Jai Prakash
Yadav, Lakshmipathy Balaji, Ashish Nehra, Irfan
Pathan, Zaheer Khan, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan
Singh and Sourav Ganguly.
